This VW was found in a semi-truck trailer in October, 2018, where it had been stored since 1998. A previous owner started to do a restoration on the Beetle, it has been re-painted white (originally blue), the top and interior were apparently replaced, but the interior was for a 1970-72 VW Beetle. It had replacement floor pans installed, but they were of the 1970-72 style, and used the wrong front seats. Also, a 1978 Super Beetle has a “fuel injected” motor. The previous owner replaced it with a 1974 carbureted motor.
When I purchased the Super Beetle, I did the following repairs to complete the restoration and make the Bug road worthy and safe: (It kept me busy all winter and spring)
Parts replaced
Gas tank
Gas tank sending unit
Fuel line front to rear
Brake lines front to rear
Master cylinder
Wheel cylinders
Brake hardware
Brake shoes
Emergency brake cable.
New cylinder jugs/pistons ( I rebuilt the "top end").
Lapped the valves ( Installed adjustible push rod tubes, new seals and "o" rings))
Replaced the clutch pressure plate, disc, throw out bearing (changed fluid in transaxle)
Transmission mounts
Carburetor
Alternator
Alt belt
Rebuilt the distributor (plugs, points condenser, rotor, cap )
Spark plug cables
Front strut cartridges.
Rear shocks
Tie rod ends
Battery
Tires.
Correct floor pans (1978 style)
The VW had 85600 miles on it when I purchased it. After about 250 miles the odometer quit. I recently replaced the speedometer with one showing 50600 miles, but the odometer quit after 3 tenths of a mile. When installing the new floor pans, I found the lower heat channel plates were badly rusted where the floor vents would open into the front passenger compartment. I sealed them with expanding foam, and the new carpet covers where the vent used to be. ( The heat system is still hooked up, and heat enters through the rear floor vent openings ).
The only things not currently working are: Rear Window Defroster, Emergency Flashers, Windshield Washers Washer( bottle cap connection tube is broken), seat belt warning light.
The radio was missing, and I replaced it with a similar AM/FM unit. I included photos of a couple of cracks in the paint, and the wear area on the drivers seat cover. I believe the paint is enamel. I have receipts for the parts replaced.
The jack and tools are in the trunk along with a spare tire. I don't have the factory top boot, the one I have is made of a stretchy cloth material.
This Bug is a very nice driving VW, and great summer "driver".
