1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle
The need for a people's car (Volkswagen in German), its concept and its functional objectives, was formulated by the leader of Nazi Germany, Adolf Hitler, who wanted a cheap, simple car to be mass-produced for his country's new road network. Lead engineer Ferdinand Porsche and his team took until 1938 to finalize the design. The result was the first Volkswagen, and one of the first rear-engined cars since the Brass Era. With 21,529,464 produced, the Beetle is the longest relationship running and most-manufactured car of a single platform ever made.
This very nicely kept 1972 Super Beetle, consists of all good solid steel, a 3,000 mile clocked car since an engine rebuild, a 2 year old respray, and maintenance records from the last 27 years of garaged ownership. A driver for someone who wants a very affordable classic.
Exterior
Marina Blue respray in good condition cover straight steel panels for this Bug. Running boards connect the fenders, which show 1972 turn signals attached to the front fenders and thin elephant print brake/backup/turn signal cluster lights attached to the back. All badging, window surrounds and lighting bezels are in good condition. The insulated convertible top is black canvas and has a glass rear window, and it presents in good condition along with the rest of the car. Standard steel wheels and VW dog dish chromed caps are all around.
Interior
Shiny vinyl high bucket seats in front and a long bench in the rear make up the seating. Black vinyl door panels with a pouch for storage is clean and straight. Black carpeting covers the floor around the seats and gearshift area and bug embroidered floor mats are kinda cute. The black very simple dash with wood trimmed radio, single circular instrument cluster, and glovebox are fronted by the original steering wheel, and are in good condition with no cracks or fading. The Wolfsburg castle logo is in the center of the steering wheel. Peeking upward reveals a nice headliner in contrasting white on the inside of the convertible top, which was new in 1992.
Drivetrain
A bit more oomph for this V-Dub during the engine rebuild it was fitted with 87mm pistons, and a .385 x 275D camshaft. It is horizontally opposed, air cooled, carbureted with a 1-barrel carburetor, and is now 1641CC's. This is attached to a 4-speed manual transmission. The rear mounted power plant sports dual exhaust with chrome exhaust tips. Noted the engine bay has been meticulously finished and detailed.
Undercarriage
Front and rear suspension are independent. Drum brakes are all around. Scanning the underside, the viewer can see floor pan repairs as well as some invasive rust. More invasive rust is on the frame, particularly on the drivers rear. Surface rust is seen overall in spotty form.
Drive-Ability
This car started right up and drove smoothly. It shifted well and creaked just a little when pushed into a turn. I am a little concerned about the frame area invasive rust. The brakes are good and have been recently (Feb 2019) totally replaced, and interior is overall above average for comfort.
Overall above average condition, with an engine rebuild to pump it up a bit, and a respray in 2018. Plenty of maintenance records and garaged for the last 27 years. Come on over to Classic Auto Mall and you may just catch the "Bug"
