1980 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Additional Info:
Up for auction is my 1980 Volkswagen Vanagon Camper which is an original California model. This camper is an ASI Riveria conversion and is the weekender style model. This camper has been used very little over the past 20 years. There is no stove and only contains a sink, water storage tank, water pump and old icebox. The camper is all original with the exception of a few interior and exterior items.
In the interior, the sliding closet door has been replaced with a solid piece of wood hung with cabinet clasps. The wood top on the console between the front seats has been replaced with one made out of solid cherry. The original rear roof shelf over the bed has also been replaced with solid cherry.with a solid cherry. The cabinetry is all original but some of it is delaminating at the edges in some spots. The old icebox interior was removed and replaced with wood shelves for dish and pan storage. The original icebox door remains.Repop manufacturers sell replacement iceboxes inexpensively. There is both theoriginal dining table as well as a rough made copy of it in solid cherry which has not yet been sanded and stained. The interior carpet is original and in reasonable condition. The front seats are in excellent original shape with no tears or noticeable wear whatsoever. The front floor rubber mat is original and has been covered with the old carpet and the mat is virtually unused. There is a hand water pump and an electric pump at the sink. The sink is stainless steel with a couple of small rusty spots which can probably be cleaned up easily. The curtains are new and purchased from Bus Depot.
The engine runs well but needs a minor tune-up (timing and adjusting the CO2 setting, etc). All the ignition parts are fairly new including plugs, wires, rotor, cap, ignition components, etc. The original fuel tank has been replaced with a new tank and the fuel system has a new pump, dual fuel filters, fuel pressure regulator and all new rubber fuel lines front to rear. There is a K&N air filter installed. 4 new fuel injectors have been installed along with new brakes. The exhaust system is stock. The hydraulic lifters were replaced not too many miles ago and new seals put on the pushrod tubes. No oil leaks on the ground. The four speed transmission works well and will also include new clutch master and slave cylinders. Clutch seems fine and engages the transmission well.
The vehicle body exhibits rust spots at the windows and some of the body seams which is fairly normal for these age Volkswagens. There are a few pinhole rusted areas around the windows but they are very small. This vehicle has never been in an accident and all body panels are original as far as I know. The camper was undercoated when it was new and the underbody and frame are in excellent shape with very little rust evident.
The poptop is weatherproof although the fiberglass outside has a few small patched areas. The poptop seal around the top should be replaced. There are a few cracks in the fiberglass top inside at the molding rails but there are no leaks and the top can be raised and lowered. The poptop curtain is in fairly good shape for an original fabric and has a few patched areas. These fabric tops are still available from the original manufacturer through the Bus Depot website. The upper single bed wood platform portion is in reasonable shape. The bed seat collapses with some effort (probably needs adjusted and lubricated) but still extends out completely. The foam cushions and fabric on the seat are not original but in good shape with no tears There is no rear engine compartment area cushion to complete the bed length but these can easily be made from thick foam and cover. The flip down wood panel under the rear seat would require replacement or repair as the old wood has broken at the hinges.
There is a Pioneer AM/FM radio with cassette player and four speaker sound system. The radio and tape player work very well. The heater works but needs the heater box cables replaced for good control. An inline heater fan (new in box) is included for installation if you wish to boost heater airflow.
That is about as honest a description that I can provide. The camper isusablewith some fairly inexpensive repairs (detailed above) . 1980 is the first year that Volkswagen came out with the Vanagon and the camper conversion by ASI Riveria is reasonable rare in the market.
