1990 Volkswagen Bus/Vanagon Additional Info:
I bought this van with the intention of converting it to a Syncro, but after driving the Automatic transmission for a few years I realized how much I like the Auto and didn't really need the ability of a syncro 99% of the time. Over the years leading up to 2013 we replaced all of the important items (as well as the not so critical items) in preparation of the Subaru transplant and new tranny with Peloquin limited slip. The van has always been well cared for. It has been garage kept it's entire life and has spent the last 13+ years in the High Desert of Central Oregon. There is no rust and the body is free of major dings and scratches. Paint is original and in great shape. Interior is also in perfect condition, clean, no rips or tears, and everything functions, even the refrigerator.
The current mileage on the van is 199,000. In 2013 we did the Subaru conversion when the van had 175,000 miles on it. Small Car in Tacoma, WA did the work on the Audi big brakes (all 4) and Subaru engine while German Master Tech of Bend, OR performed all other services. Since performing the overhaul of the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, etc. we have put 25,000 miles on it with no issues. We take it in for routine maintenance, that's it. It drives and handles beautifully, gets +/- 18 mpg and will cruise at 75+ mph uphill or in wind.
Here are some of the highlights of the upgrades and work we have had performed:
Transmission is rebuilt using Audi 5000 Turbo components with Peloquin Limited Slip differential - strong enough to handle a Turbo WRX engine. We did this first, not knowing exactly which engine we were going to use, this is a very robust re-build.
Engine is from a 2008 Subaru Impreza (35,000 miles at time of install) - 2.5L naturally aspirated.
Stainless Steel coolant pipes and new radiator.
Air Conditioning re-charged and blowing cold
Audi big brakes by Small Car.
GoWesty 1.5" lift springs and Bilstein Shocks.
Burley Motor Sports Upper Control Arms - serviceable.
Full front end rebuild.
15" GoWesty (Mercedes style) wheels powder coated Gunmetal Grey w/ BFG AT KO tires.
Custom 2" receiver Trailer hitch for bike racks.
HID head light upgrade.
Interior:
Alpine BlueTooth multi-media stereo, (4) Alpine 5" speakers with 5 way JL Audio amplifier and ported sub-woofer - professionally installed, very clean and simple, excellent sound throughout.
Propex HS 2000 furnace and thermostat
1100 Watt Power Inverter
New starter battery and 110 Amp Hour House battery - separator/circuit breaker - set up for solar - lights, stereo, etc are run through this so the starter battery won't go dead
Removable/foldable rear-facing seat
Pop-top assist installed
All in all this van is fun to drive and was purpose built in a simple, yet functional manner. The kitchen is like new and everything functions as it should. The pop-top is also in perfect condition. There is so much to list about this van and simply not enough space. Please come see it and drive it!
