1974 Volkswagen Thing ACAPULCO Additional Info:
up for auction are two 1974 volkswagon type 181 things as a package deal.
The Volkswagon "Thing" or type 181 was only sold for only 2 years in Americ, 1973-1974 but were sold for longer durations in other countries.
These cars have been featured in hundreds of movies and commercials over the years and still are making appearances in new movies,50 first dates is one movie that first comes to mind..
You are sure to be the center of attention everywhere you go when driving a THINGPeople just want to ask questions and take pictures with your car when they get a chance,,,
I couldn't count how many times I have come out of a store to find people standing near my car in the parking lot and taking pictures of it.they are always smiling, and say things like "wow i haven't seen one of these since" or "what are these cars called?"
the first thing I will Describe is the orange one. it was originally green or avocado.it has a new paint Job, it has both hard top and a soft top (soft top & side curtains are a bit dried up and brittle). It runs and drives nice.pan area under the battery has holes and is thin but still holding ok.It has new EMPI aluminum Rims and New TiresSome of the small parts and trim that were taken off to complete the paint job and have yet to be put back on...(all the parts are here)
overall this is a great car, very collectible and rapidly going up in value.(info from hagerty values)parts for these THINGS are plentiful and easy to find, they share many of the same parts and components as other air cooled volkswagons...
2nd of the two cars is also a 1974 vw thing. But this is a real Jewel in the rough
This is a real Acapulco version..these were produced only 1 year, 1974, only 400 were estimated sold in America.
It also has a hard top with the hard to find factory Roof rack on it (sought after by VW enthusiasts)but includes the complete and in good condition factory metal cage for the Surrey Top and factory Running Boards.
The ACAPULCO VERSION is different from other things with its rare original paint scheme of white and blue,
(paint has been verified that it is original color by checking color behind the dash panel guages)
the special SURREY TOP frame is includedthese original Acapulco versions are highly sought after, and it is especially difficult to find one with the factory Surrey Top,Acapulcos are valued at nearly twice the value of the standard type 181 things.
this is the real thing, authentic Acapulco the Vin#s have been registered and verified with the vw "thing registery"
This Acapulco needs a proper restoration(new seats and surrey top are still available for this Acapulco with the special screen printed striped blue and white upholstery at the thing shop online)
Not surprising or uncommon that the floor pans and rockers need replaced as they are rusty and have holes (also easy to find online)it runs and Drives very well and is super fasthas good tires on the star rims and also included is the original classic style rims for your restoration authenticity
Note the rare wood steering wheel and trigger style shifter knobThese are mid 70s era correct upgrades and would go well with some wood DuckBoards floor boards to complete that beach resort look.
I had planned on having the body and paint restored but life has me going in another direction so I am selling this Rare Jewel.doors are easily removed and refitted by hand2 roll bars are included (one for each car)all parts are here and are included to reassemble this car complete...
This is great worthwhile investment project car and sure to be the Jewel of any garage once restored
barretts auction sold one for $50k and I have seen others go for $25k on eBay and other auctions
asking only $20k for both cars as a package deal
