Super difficult parting with this van. We have come a long way together! I bought the van planning on doing the engine conversion, but had to do it faster than originally expected. The original engine ran but was really prone to over heating. Learned to burp the cooling system from this site on the first day I had it!
There had been a lot of defered maintenance. So anyone who knows these vans knows what it takes, and of course most of those dollars are unrecoverable. That being said I have a solid $50k in this van in just engine, paint, transmission, wheels, a/c, etc. Not counting maintenance. Hard to believe even for me but I sat here totaling up receipts this morning.
Last long trip was from Alamosa CO to TN, AL, and return. Zero issues, ran strong and great the whole time. Last April we had a vehicle run a stop sign on us, and I T'ed into them. I was only going 25 mph so though it needed body work it wasn't too bad. AllPro in Eugene, OR did the work. She looks really good. I had an outside appraisal done before the accident and the van was valued at 37k, she looks much better now and I have made a couple of upgrades.
So zero rust, and running wonderfully mechanically. The transmission has the freeway flier r&p and a limited slip which works wonderfully well in foul weather with the rear engine .
I have receipts from just about everything I have ever done.
I will list out upgrades below. If you are looking for a solid automatic trans vanagon, this is it. Still to be done is the upholstery in the back.
The chasis has more than 200k on it I am sure, odo didn't work when I got it, replaced with a good used working one. The subie engine had about 100k on it when it went in and I have put about 30k on it since then. I did the headgaskets, timing belt, water pump, etc, so this engine should be good and without issue for another 100k. I use an app for tracking and it seems like I can download all of that exact info. Current odometer ready 128494.
Upgrade list below.

I will add some additional pictures over the next few days. This van has an instagram account, glad to hand that over too, you can check out more on Overland Betty at Instagram. As my luck would have it the a/c stopped working on the 14th. It was the compressor, so need to replace the condensor, dryer, and orifice. Not the end of the world, but I reduced the price accordingly.
