1971 Volkswagen Beetle - Classic Standard Additional Info:
I began the conversion 8 years ago. I purchased the VW for $3500, the Porsche 914 Fuchs wheels with tires cost $1500 (worth even more now), the controller, charger, and motor were $2500. An all new interior package was $1000. Thousands of dollars in additional parts were purchased, many installed and many that are still to be installed. My cost to date is well over $12,000 and unknown amounts of my time. I first installed the controller, motor, transmission adapter and batteries and then used the VW in testing for a few months and ran it for 30 or 40 miles. After testing it out I spent the next two years restoring most everything. The front brakes were converted to disk, I installed new rear brakes, tie rods, bushings, heavy-duty shocks, springs, struts, floor pans, virtually everything. Currently the car needs batteries (9 8V lead acid) a new windshield, rear apron, paint job and a lot of your time. The doors, hood and windows are currently not mounted. A work in progress! This is not a project for the faint of heart. Expect another half year or more of work before the VW is back on the road. The speed is limited to 45-50mph and range is maximum of 40 miles, but all of that is dependent on the batteries you install.
