1983 Volkswagen Rabbit GTI. Mostly original. Good to very good condition. 108k miles. No reserve. Mostly a western car which I bought from California and shipped to Michigan in late 2012. Has been stored winters during my ownership.
Exterior paint is all original aside from left front fender which looks to have been repainted at some unknown time. No modifications or alterations. All original GTI parts and details are there. Any rust is only surface rust. No bubbling or corrosion. Paint shines pretty well and looks good at some distance. Small impact damage on left rear turn indicator as shown in photo. There is some surface rust on rockers which has been treated with Dupli Color Rust Fix. There are stone chips on lower rear fenders. Also a number of small chips, scratches and dents which are difficult to see in photos. Nothing too significant. Rear valance are is rust and rot free as shown in photos.
Interior features the original sport seats recovered with official VW Classic plaid fabric from MK1 Auto Haus. There's enough material left over (which goes with the car) to do the back seat. Back seat is included in sale and is still in original red material with no rips. Red carpet on rear hatch cover is missing. Headliner is out but I have the original cardboard headliner which is included in the sale as is the overhead light cover. All gauges work aside from the tachometer. New tachometer signal stabilizer from MK1 Auto Haus is included. I have not diagnosed the problem with the tach but this is common culprit. Has period correct radio which powers up but does not operate. Vent windows have been replaced with fixed windows from Rabbit pickup.
Mechanical condition is very good. I've had a lot of deferred maintenance work done over the past few summers. All work done by German Auto in Grand Rapids MI. Work includes; cleaned injectors, rebuilt/remanufactured fuel distributor, new fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel accumulator, all new oil and water seals including valve and oil pan covers, new water pump and related seals, coolant flush, new clutch, new thermostat, and rear crank seal. All parts new aside from rebuilt fuel distributor. I installed new shocks, struts, and strut bearings.
New set of BF Goodrich G-Force Super Sport tires within last 750 miles.
Remaining issues are; no horn, windshield wipers, or tachometer. Looks like an old batter leaked and corroded the battery tray where the tie down bolt is located. I've treated with POR 15 but there is no bolt to secure the batter so I've used a rubber strap.
Car is very much as it presents itself. You can enjoy as is and work on the small remaining items or fully repaint/restore. This seems to be a really good baseline car, especially given how hard unmolested examples are to find.
