THIS 1968 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE BAJA IS A COMPLETE RESTORATION, AND NO EXPENSE WAS SPARED. UNLIKE SO MANY OF THEM THAT ARE BUILT AND NEVER QUITE 100% FINISHED...THIS ONE IS DONE AND READY TO ENJOY. I HAVE A PINBALL BUSINESS THAT I WOULD LIKE TO BUY SOMETHING LIKE A VAN THAT I CAN USE AS ADVERTISING AS WELL...WHAT DO YOU HAVE?
ENGINE/TRANSMISSION:THE ENGINE IS A 1965 CC THAT IS A COMPLETE REBUILT ENGINE. IT HAS A PAIR OF WEBER 34'S FOR FUEL, A BOSCH 009 DISTRIBUTOR AND BLUE COIL FOR IGNITION, AN ALUMINUM POWER PULLEY AND HIGH OUTPUT ALTERNATOR FOR CHARGING. THE ENGINE CARRIES OVER 50 PSI OIL PRESSURE WHEN COLD AND ALMOST 60 HOT GOING DOWN THE ROAD. THERE ARE 2 BRAND NEW HEATER BOXES ON THIS BAJA AND THE ENTIRE HEATING SYSTEM WORKS WELL. IT HAS A PAIR OF VARIABLE SPEED TURBO FANS MOUNTED INLINE TO THE HEATER TUNNEL AND IT DOES A GOOD JOB OF KEEPING YOU WARM. ALL CHROME ENGINE TINWORK AND DOGHOUSE STYLE OIL COOLER. THE TRANSMISSION IS A REBUILT TYPE 1 WITH BEEF A DIFF. IT HAS AN EMPI SHIFTER AND ALL NEOPREME SHIFTER BUSHINGS.EVEN WITH ALL OF THE LIGHTS ON, AND THE STEREO AND AMPS THIS CAR HAS OVER 14 VOLTS CHARGING. I BOUGHT THIS CAR FROM A GENTLEMAN THAT HAD IT SITTING FOR A CONSIDERABLE PERIOD OF TIME, SO I REBUILT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM AND REPLACE THE TANK WITH A BRAND NEW ONE.
SUSPENSION & BRAKES:ALTHOUGH THIS IS A 1968 CAR, IT IS FITTED WITH AN IRS TRANSAXLE. ALL OF THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION MOUNTS ARE SOLID. THE FRONT BEAM IS A BALL JOINT UNIT AND IS ALL NEW PARTS, AS WELL AS HAVING ADJUSTERS ON BOTH TUBES AND STOP KIT TO PREVENT DAMAGE FROM OVER EXTENSION. THE BRAKES ARE ALL NEW, AND THE LINES ARE ALL STEEL BRAIDED TO THE WHEEL CYLINDERS. STOPS VERY WELL, AND EMERGENCY BRAKE WORKS CORRECTLY. THERE ARE KYB GAS-A-JUST SHOCKS ON ALL 4 CORNERS. THE CAR HAS BRAND NEW B.F. GOODRICH RADIAL ALL TERRAIN TIRES FRONT AND REAR. THE DRUMS HAVE WHEEL STUD KITS FOR ADDED SAFETY.
INTERIOR:THE INSIDE OF THIS CAR IS BEAUTIFUL. IT HAS ALL NEW INTERIOR, AND NEW CARPET AND HEADLINER. THE DASH HAS A FULL COMPLIMENT OF GAUGES INCLUDING A SPEEDO, TACH, OIL PRESSURE VOLTS, FUEL, AND A CYLINDER HEAD TMEP GAUGE (THE SENSOR FOR THE SPARK PLUG IS MISSING) I CHECKED IT AND IT WORKS OTHERWISE. THE REALLY NEAT PART OF THIS CAR IS IT HAS A FORD ESCORT OR SIMILAR STEERING COLUMN RETROFITTED TO THE CAR. THIS NOT ONLY ALLOWS FOR A LOCKING STEERING WHEEL, BUT YOU GET THE HEADLIGHTS AND WIPERS ALL ON THE COLUMN LIKE A MODERN CAR, AND GET THIS...3 SPEED AND INTERMITTENT WIPERS AND REAL ELECTRIC SQUIRTERS! THE RADIO IS BRAND NEW, AND IS IPOD COMPATIBLE, AND THERE IS A BRAND NEW COBRA 18 CB RADIO WITH WEATHER BAND...A MUST HAVE IF YOU WANT TO PUT A 4 FOOT ANTENNA ON THE ROOF. THE CARPET AND DOOR PANELS LOOK AWESOME, AND THE HEADLINER IS JUST RIGHT FOR THE SPLIT WINDOWS. I AM SURE I AM LEAVING SOMETHING OUT, BUT THIS IS SUCH A NICE CAR, IT IS HARD TO DOCUMENT EVERYTHING .
EXTERIOR:THIS CAR WAS PAINTED TO THE SAME PAINT SCHEME FOUND ON AN ACTUAL HOT WHEELS CAR. THE GRAPHICS ARE VERY NICE LOOKING AND THEY ARE NOT VINYL, IT IS ALL PAINTED. THE ENTIRE WIDE EYE BAJA KIT IS BONDED ON, NOT JUST BOLTED ON WITH SELF TAPPING SCREWS. THE ROOF WAS CONVERTED TO AN EARLY 50'S SPLIT WINDOW AND IT IS A VERY NICE TOUCH. THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY PAINTED INSIDE AND OUT, HAS SOUND DEADENER ON THE FLOORS, AND THERE IS ABSOLUTELY ZERO RUST ANYWHERE. THE FRONT AND REAR BARS ARE THE DOUBLE TUBE STYLE, AND IT HAS A PAIR OF NERF BARS TO PROTECT THE SIDES, AND THERE ARE NICE LITTLE TOUCHES LIKE A LIGHTED REAR LICENSE PLATE FRAME, BAJA FLOOD LIGHTS, AND THE GAS TANK IS FROM AN OLDER MODEL WITH THE FILLER UNDER THE HOOD...THE SIDE DOOR HAS BEEN REMOVED AND FILLED IN FOR A CLEANER LOOK. THERE IS SO MUCH TO THIS CAR THAT I CANNOT POSSIBLY MENTION IT ALL.
THERE ARE A COUPLE OF MINOR ISSUES WITH THIS CAR, THE BIGGEST ONE BEING THAT AT SOME POINT IN ITS LIFE WHILE IT WAS IN STORAGE SOMEONE PAINTED A CAR IN IT'S VICINITY AND AS SUCH, THERE ARE A FEW PLACES WHERE THERE IS A FAINT HINT OF CLEAR FROM THAT PAINT JOB. IT IS NOT THAT NOTICEABLE BUT I WANT TO MENTION IT, AND WHEN I GET A FREE MOMENT I WILL GO OUT AND HAND RUB IT WITH COMPOUND AND IT COMES OFF VERY EASY AND THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE PAINT. THE OTHER ISSUE ISNT AN ISSUE, JUST A POINT OF MENTIONING THAT THE REAR SUSPENSION IS SET PRETTY FIRM SO IT BUMPY STREETS. THIS CAR DOES GO DOWN THE INTERSTATE AT 65 MILES AN HOUR PERFECTLY FINE AND IS VERY STABLE...THEN AGAIN, WITH SO MUCH OF IT BEING BRAND NEW, IT IS A VERY ENJOYABLE CAR TO DRIVE. AS I MENTIONED EARLIER, I AM OPEN TO TRADES OF OLDER MILK TRUCKS, OLDER DELIVERY VANS LIKE A METRO OR SIMILAR, OR AN OLDER CABOVER GMC ASTRO OR INTERNATIONAL 4070B...I HAVE A SMALL VAN TRAILER THAT WILL WORK IF I CANNOT FIND AN OLDER DELIVERY VAN OR ECONOLINE.
