1974 Volkswagen Thing 181 Additional Info:
According to some well known car folk, he VW type 181 or better known as the "Thing" is one of THE fastest appreciating collectables out there....yeah, ho'd have thought, ut then again, ho would have thought an early VW bus would EVER be worth over $100k??? .....not me, nd I'm a car guy ! :-)
So here it is all y'all, 974 VW "THANG" with an indicated and most likely correct 58,000 miles and some change.... :)
This VW came out of Priest River, daho. I acquired it from a good 'ol sherif. It was used during the summer months to go to the lake etc. It had been stored indoors while not in use. Looking at the car, oth myself and a factory trained VW tech from days gone by, bie at European Autohaus, elieve the miles are right. There is NO rust. The car is dead on straight.
Mechanically, he car is now sound. The transmissions second gear syncro was pretty much toast...could be he taught the kiddies how to drive in it...so, he gearbox was pulled and overhauled. While it was out the clutch and pressure plate were replaced, hy not - right? But everything else was in good order, n fact, e didn't even have to resurface the flywheel...another reason the miles seem right. I just changed the oil and most of it stays in the motor.... hey, ts a VW....
The car has had one repaint that looks to have been done some time ago. The quality of the paint is above average, hough it was applied a bit thick. It shines up just fine, esides, ho knew these "things" were going to be worth anything, ight?? :) The interior of the car is absolutely original inclusive of its interior paint and floor paint ! ! ! Speaking of floors, his "thing" has the optional folding cargo floor.....very cool !
The car runs great ! People love it, t get waves everywhere it is driven.....they were cool then, hey are cooler now ! Finding one with these miles and in this condition however, s rare as hell. Most have been rusted through or cobbled up. There is no top...yes, t was cold...deal with it...this is a car for those who don't need navigation and a cup holder for cryin' out loud ........ :)
Should you care to know more about these cult like "THINGS", here is a great article in Hemmings but I can't link it here...... stupid ain't it !
