Production on these European convertibles was less than 800 in 1959 and less than 200 with this color combo. I can honestly say that I have not seen another one in person or listed for sale and I am very active in the VW community. This is a July of 1958 Euro Convertible Bug. Body and Chassis # is 2044915. Engine # is 2494480 early August which makes this a matching number car. The vehicle is titled as a 1959. This is a running and driving car. I use those terms loosely. It does run quite well and it stops perfectly. This vehicle has not seen the roads in over 20 years. Tires are shot but hold air, king and link pins need replacing and so on. I am not trying to sell this is a hood ride or a good driver and restore as you go. This vehicle is ready to be restored completely as it well deserves because of its rarity.
Lets start with rust - Pans are gone. Patched roughly and poorly. The tunnel and bulk head are in great condition. Heater channels are bad on the drivers side and may be savedon the passenger side but once stripped down... probably need replacing. The usual rust in the rear corners is present. inner fenders in the front are not to bad. Drivers side is the worst down in the heater channel area. Front apron is savable but someone added US bumpers and drilled for the supports. I would just bet on replacing.
Goods - Fenders are all original. Passenger side front has rust in the inner edge but may be worth fixing as the front fenders have nice clean wire tubes still attached. Turn signals were added at some time and each front fender has 3 small holes drilled in the top. The convertible top frame is in very nice condition and only has 1 broken rivet at the main pivot. Otherwise it functions perfectly. The rear window is present but not pictured. Dash is complete and not damaged. KM speedometer is correct and in great condition. Rear view mirror is also in great restorable condition. All of the seats are original and the upholstery is actually good enough to unstitch and re-dye. Door panels are rough at the bottoms. All convertible chrome outer strips are present but not pictured. Deck lid is rust free but has a dent or 2 here and there. It does have a very clean rain catcher installed as well. Another good side of this car is that it was never used as a parts car so the small trinkets are still there. Such as, perfect glove box, dome light, dome light safety switch, dome light switch but has broken knob, glove box lock, locking hood latch, and so on.
Here is a small list of parts NOT included with the sale of the car but parts I do have to start the project. These will be sold at an additional cost on top of the purchase price.
NOS Convertible Semaphores. There are no semaphores installed in the car now.
NOS VW heater channel and bottom for the drivers side.
I have a set of 4 NOS VW fenders. They are not steel wire tube fenders but one could remove the originals and install them on these fenders. The fronts do not have turn signal holes. The rear fenders have over rider support holes that would need to be filled.
I also have some nice engine parts that would aid in the engine restoration. Such as clean rust free rear tin/breast plate, NOS VW stamped muffler and most anything else needed to restore flawlessly.
I will take a ton of pictures and compress them in a file to send to any interested buyers. Just send me your email address and I will send them out to you. Call, textor email with any other questions.
