Very nice, original 1971 Volkswagon Karmann Ghia Coupe in its rare factory color, Adriatic Blue which was offered from 1971 to 1972. This rare find was delivered to Atlas Volkswagen in San Francisco in 1971, when it was sold to the original owner who owned the Ghia till 1986 per included records. The gentleman that sold me this car told me how his friend purchased this beauty from the original owner, and had it painted the original color in 1988. The 2nd owner suffered from health issues, and parked the Karmann Ghia in his garage for 28 years until he passed. His widow sold the car to the gentleman I purchased the Karmann Ghia from, who was an old friend of the deceased husband and widow, therefore I’m the 4thowner with a clear title in my name.

The last registration sticker of 1988 is still on the original California blue and yellow plates included in the sale with registration papers documenting these are correct to this car in case the new owner would like to reassign them to this car for a truly vintage look. I made an attempt, but the process is longer than this auction, so the new owner can fill out the application at DMV when registering.

This Karmann Ghia is a rare example of how the Karmann Ghia was sold from the factory 45 years ago, taking the driver back to a time when things were simpler, and more carefree.

The car is complete and original with everything working as outlined in the owner’s manual included in the sale, along with other documents pertaining to this special vehicle’s history, including the complete vintage tool kit that came with this car.

The new stock Solex Carburetor starts this Karmann Ghia instantly without touching the gas pedal. This car has all the proper vacuum hoses hooked up to the original vacuum advance distributor providing smooth acceleration best found with the original German design. Since the car only has 68,350 miles since new over the last 45 years, it still runs, drives, stops and steers, idles and accelerates just as it did when it was new. It turns on a dime, has a very tight turning radius and will screech the new tires with a firm press of the brake pedal. This model has a dual circuit master cylinder from the factory for safety with a working warning light on the wood grain dash to keep you aware of a brake system malfunction. The front brakes are factory disc for much better stopping power and the suspension is independent, with a full synchromesh transaxle for easy, safe stick shift driving. The engine number coincides with the VIN, making this the original engine, for a completely original car. These came with 1584cc, dual port engines with about 60HP at 4000 RPM. This Ghia will keep up with highway traffic with no problems, running 70mph without any issues.

Since this Karmann Ghia is bone stock and has yet to be restored, it still retains all of its original sound proofing in the engine compartment and interior cabin to suppress the sounds of the air cooled flat four without losing the nostalgia of the simple, yet efficient design, while maintaining the light carefree feel of driving a vintage Karmann Ghia. Roll down the windows, open the rear popouts and glide down the road with the wind in your hair in this vintage classic. You’ll be sure to have a smile on your face!

There is some fading to the chrome radio plate, some wear to the carpet beneath the floor mats, but that is to be expected of an original car of 45 years. The engine compartment received a freshened up detail. The exterior had 3 minor scratches about an inch long that were touched up with a brush and shown in photos with a quarter for scale. The only other signs of wear would be very slight discoloration on the original headliner. The rubber seals are supple and in good condition. The bright work is intact and shiny, although there are minor dings in the bumper guards from normal use, but nothing to be concerned about. Despite a few details of minimal wear from being 45 years old, this Ghia is super straight, with excellent gaps, no rust, and only gets thumbs up everywhere it goes.

The mechanics are intact and functioning properly with no known issues and very clean for the age of the vehicle reflective of only 17 years of maintained and pampered road service for a 45 year old car.

All the glass is Sekurit, and all lenses are original Hella.
