1965 Triumph TR4 Roadster
For consignment and the beneficiary of a 3 year long ground up restoration, we give you a Triumph TR4 right out of 1965. She's looking very snappy with beautiful paint, a like new convertible top, a glistening grille and of course wire wheels. A 2 owner car, originally purchased in Germany and driven on the Autobahn, (a route map is included with your purchase), then imported to the US of A via Baltimore, MD then remaining in the DC area until 2001 when our consignor found the car in a barn. This one bucks tradition and goes with a RED exterior and black interior. Slowly one can see the early influence in the boxy design aspect for the TR series which will eventually culminate in the TR6.
Exterior
Anytime we hear ground up restoration, I get excited because I know it will be a painstaking process to get a beautiful yield in the end and this example does not disappoint. A very shiny front aluminum polished grille with round headlights completed by in the hood casings and the TRIUMPH badging. A nicely polished bumper with vertical push bars frames the bottom. The rounded front quarters have a chrome trimming on top and this helps highlight the boxy styling and large wheels look. The steel is straight and rust free and bathed in gorgeous Dupont acrylic enamel Cherry Red which is the deep end of the pool. All panels are minding their gaps nicely. On back a nice spacious boot with vertical squared off tail lights for the rear quarter endings. When the top is down a very wonderful tonneau covering complete with a chromed accenting curved trimming for the snaps looks just beautiful. Knockoff hub wire wheels on all 4 corners add to the decidedly British feel.
Interior
A swing of the doors and we see a wonderfully restored black smooth vinyl stitched panel with chromed window cranks, the door actuator, and chromed handle to pull it shut. We also see all new weatherstripping here and red painted metal is reserved for the sills and under door jambs which are all rust free. Dual tuck and roll insert, and smooth black bolstered bomber styled buckets are in for the passengers. These have nice wide white piping to highlight the edges. In the back there is no seat, just carpeted panels in black looking very clean and unused. Upfront, wood burl graces the dash front and is peppered with beautifully restored nearly perfect black faced British Jaeger gauges with white numbering and lettering and white pointers, all surrounded by shiny bezels. The burl stretches across the face of the dash and holds within 4 additional gauges surrounding a centrally located ashtray and below this more knobs and pulls for your enjoyment. A glovebox is accessible for the passenger is in front and a black padded vinyl dash top looking very nice with no cracking or fading is on top. Re-dyed black wool carpeting is flooding the floors and looks like new. A wood knob topped small shift lever rises from the center hump towards the driver's waiting hand.
Drivetrain
Talk about pristine you need to gaze into this engine bay. All bathed in red surround it and has all new wiring, supple hoses and chromed accenting throughout. In its heart is a rebuilt in 2016 by ACA Performance 2138cc 4-cylinder with a chromed valve covering. It is fed petrol through 2 rebuilt SU carbs, and has a new in 2016 4-speed manual transmission on back with a new clutch at the same time. The rear axle weighs in at a 3.70 ratio. Looking nearly showroom under this bonnet with a recored radiator, Pertronix ignition and rebuilt generator.
Undercarriage
Showroom, with a touch of surface rust peppering the black framing and floor pans, and shiny stainless steel exhaust. It has a touch of road dirt on her and does have front disc brakes and rear drums which are all new. A new fuel line and new bushings are seen throughout under here. Independent coil springs are on front and leaf springs provide the ride and handling and were also rebuilt.
Drive-Ability
A super quick starter, and with a little choke once it warmed up it ran swimmingly. Rail-like handling, and snappy acceleration from the 4-cylinder fed by those 2 SU's. All working on the electrics and other functions on this beauty.
This is a very economical way to get into the sports car game. A totally buttoned up TR4 which has its charm and looks like it was designed in the early 1960s and done so in Britain. I cannot get enough of those large wheels, thin body and square styling with neatly rounded over corners, and the hood formed headlight casings are to die for. Quintessential Triumph.
