1988 Toyota Land Cruiser Additional Info:
I picked up this 1988 FJ62 in the summer of 2011. It wasoriginallya Georgia truck and blew up it's motor at 206,000 miles. I yanked the engine, sold good parts from it and tossed the rest. The FJ62 axles are also gone. I do have the FJ62 transmission and transfer case.
The body on this FJ62 is very nice, there is not a spot of rust on it anywhere. It looks to me like it was never used off-road, more a grocery getter and soccer mom truck. It does have a little bit of shopping mall rash, few small dents here and there on the truck, when I say small I mean small. The kind of dents you get from a shopping cart bumping into the side of the truck. The truck was complete when I got it besides no axles. I have stripped all the interior and dash out of the truck. All parts have been bagged, tagged and boxed up. Just the other day I was looking for some nuts & bolts from the ruck and they were very easy to find since I have bagged and tagged the parts. I have everything for the interior including the original seats, carpet, sound deadening, everything.
I took a 1994 FZJ80 Land Cruiser chassis and shortened it 5" to match the wheelbase of the FJ62. The frame shorten was done well and I didn't use some whimpy 120v welder to do it. I used my Miller 212 and plasma cutter on this project, any steel I have added is 3/16" and 1/4" cold rolled. I built all new body mounts on the FZJ80 frame to fit the FJ62 body. It came out really nice. The FZJ80 chassis has e-locked axles that work excellent.
Both front and rear axles are fully rebuilt along with new rotors and pads. The axles are running Aisin free wheeling hubs and the ABS has been removed. I have stock coil springs as well as Slee 4" lifted springs including heavy duty progressive rear springs. I also have a variety of coil spring spacers from Metal Tech and Old Man Emu. I have some custom made rear lower control arms that are made from 2" solid 7075 aluminum and use aJohnnyJoint, these are super nice and alsoadjustable.
I have all parts for this project besides an engine and transmission. I have an LQ4 6L Chevy v8 along with a 4L80e automatic trans along with a Marks Adapter that are all brand new. I also have a H2FA t-case from an 80-series to go behind the Chevy powertrain. I can include this mounted up in the truck for $5,000 extra. Make no mistake, this truck currently has no engine or transmission! Or if you don't like Chevy in your Toyota you can put in a 5.7L Toyota v8 (big bucks!) or say a Toyota diesel like the 12HT.
I am leaving the country in December and so I need to sell this project.
A video of the truck can be seen here on youtube; *edit* Ebay won't let me include the link to the video, very stupid. So simply search youtube for "1988 FJ62 Land Cruiser sitting on a 1994 FZJ80 chassis" my user name on youtube is PortalPatrol.
A more complete description along with a listing of parts follows;
I was and am still building this truck for myself. I have had many Land Cruisers over the years but this was to be my "dream" Cruiser. Thing is I am leaving the USA at the end of the year and do not want to put this truck in storage for years on end. It is not possible for me to have this truck finished 100% before I go.
I had a very nice 1991 FJ80 Cruiser with a v8 in it, I had well over $30,000 into this truck. I rolled this truck in the Saint Anthony sand dunes in July of 2015. It was a light roll but it trashed the body beyond repair. The chassis and all mechanical were fine, I drove it home from Idaho after the roll, over Teton Pass. This is where the large majority of FZJ parts come from. The frame however is from a different 1994 FZJ80 I had sitting around. I have shortened the frame to match the FJ62 wheelbase, it has been shortened 5". The frame shorten was done right and the frame is perfectly square after the shorten, I have pictures to prove this. The interior of the FJ62 has been torn down, all parts are bagged, tagged and boxed up. Factory sound deadening has been removed from the floor. I was going to paint the truck but I do not have time for that now. The original paint on the truck is good though as you can see in the pictures, if you touch it up and do a cut & polish it will last many more years. I was going to paint it because I am not a big fan of this color blue and I had planned to keep this truck 20+yrs. All glass besides windshield is still in the truck and in excellent condition. Original headliner is still in the 62 and also in great condition. Before I tore down the FJ62 I put a battery in it to test the elctricals. Everything on the truck worked except one rear door lock.
