1987 Toyota 4Runner SR5 with 169K Original Miles!
I have decided to sell my much loved first generation 4Runner. My priorities have changed and I would like to find a good home for it. This ad will be rather lengthy, butwill provide in detail, pictures included, this 4Runner for sale, so of youhave the time, then please read on.
1987 Toyota SR5 4Runner 22RE 4-Cyl, Auto. It currently has 168,500 originalmiles and is driven regularly. It comes equipped with PS, PB, Cold AC, Factory tintedwindows, AM/FM CD Player with detachable faceplate andremote. Rare "double stack console". Dealer installed andSmitty-Built rear bumper with wired towing and hitch. Factory Metallic Brown exterior. This truck was repainted at some point in its life appearing to closely match the originalcolor. My guess that it was done simply due to paint fade. In my opinion, it was not done very well, but has held up surprisinggood. It has been freshly buffed and holds its shine quitewell and provides nice 20ft viewing. There is absolutelyzero rust or bondo on this truck and it has all its originalbody panels. It is accident free and can be verified by theclean Carfax report. The top on this 4Runner I am told from the previous owner has never been off. Since the caps holding the top in place are still there and appear original, I support this observation. The racks on topcome with the truck. I believe that the fog lights on thefront bumper to be dealer installed as they are very outdated, and this is the reason that I not changed them out (to preserve originality). The Toyota emblem ismissing on the grill, and the 4Runner emblems on the B-Pillar will need replacement. All the glass is good. The windshieldwas replaced and is free of rust or cracks with a new seal and is leak-free. The overall condition of the tan interior is in fair condition. Thedash has one crack vertically on the passenger side. It has aDash Pad that was installed in 1995 (there is a receipt).
Most instrumentation is ingood working order with exception to the following: thetemperature gauge does not work correctly. It will move offcold approximately halfway about 60-120 seconds after starting. It has been this way since I have owned the truck. I simply make sure, that the overfill coolant tank is full and monitor for fluidleaking, which is not occurring. This is a known issue with the first generation 4Runners.It can be corrected by either repairing the gauge by removal or installing a separate temperature gauge. The AC, although it blows ice cold, does become warm at idle. It is probably the relay switch. The low speed on the fan does not work and the rearwindow defrost is also inoperable. Both were this way whenI purchased it. I have a brand-new OEM Faceplate for thetemperature controls that will go with the truck. The factoryhorn was disconnected and replaced a much louder oneinstalled in the front portion of the front passenger fender well. The headlights have been converted to HID andproject a bright beam. All lights, including backup, are ingood working condition. The seats, both front and back, are original in fabric. They are going to require recovering, foam included. The worst is of course the driver seat asshown in the pictures. I have installed new seat covers until this is completed. The door panels, both front and back, are in good condition. The cargo panels in the rear of thetruck: the passenger side is in poor condition and will require replacement or repair. The driver’s side isgood and reinforcement thru painting something along the lines of Rhino lining will be satisfactory. The front section of carpet is in good condition. It appearsthat this was replaced at some point. The rear section is worn and will need replaced. This includes the section on the inside of the tailgate. The headliner is in good shape with no concerns. There is no leaking anywhere inside the truck from water.
The truck has 168,500 original miles as mentioned. However, the engine was rebuilt in October of 2010 at about 125K, so it has almost44K on the rebuild and runs smoothly without issue or concern. It does not burn any oil. I am using Redline 10W40 oil. It is expensive, but worth it. Itwas just changed. The previous owner also ran a fullsynthetic motor oil as well. The transmission just completeda 11-quart flush to Dextron III. It previously had Redline ATF.
Some discussion here: the transmission, since I have owned it,has had an issue with erratic shifting from drive to overdrive, and back down. Understand that it is not slipping. I havepulled a tent trailer with the truck fully loaded, up a 7% grade to over 7 thousand feet.It performed as expected. Say want you want about the A340F, but it is a tough automatic transmission. I have had several people look at it and no one really had a clear answer on what the problem might be. One thing is clear: it does not need rebuilt. I simply dealwith the erratic shifting and finesse it when needed. Since moving back to the Dextron III, it is shifting somewhat better. I will be happy to discuss this topic further if requested. The radiator and several cooling hoses were replaced lastspring. It should be noted that the radiator is copper core. Fluids for the braking and power steering are clear and in good working condition, as are both systems. Both axles are using Redline 75W90 and are in good condition. It wasrecently discovered that the CV Axle on the passenger side has a split on the lower portion of the boot and is leaking, so it will need replacement soon. There is someseepage from the oil pan, but not enough for concern. There is very little or no drip on the ground. The transfercase works as it should, and I have not had any problems with it. U-Joints and exhaust system aregood shape. The tires are Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac LT265/75R16 andwere mounted last spring to the aftermarket rims. It should be noted at this point that other than the stereo, headlights, and wheels and tires, to my knowledge, this truck is stock. It passes emissions beautifully and has never failed to start for me other than when I left the headlights on, orthe battery needed replacement (once).
Now for the history: This 4Runner was purchased new in Downy, California at Penske Toyota where it remained with the original owner for the next 7yrs who lived in San Jose. It wasthen traded in at Livermore Honda in San Jose in 1995 andnext owner had it for about 3 yrs. The next owner then had it until 2005. The gentleman Ipurchased it from owned it from 2005-2015. He was the one that had the engine rebuilt in 2010. The truck, to my knowledge, stayed in the San Jose and Sacramento area until I brought it toBoise, Idaho, where it currently resides. Since it spent most of itslife in California, this would explain the condition of the body, and the dry rot of the interior. It is very difficult to find onestill in this condition and restoration would be very manageable. I have a lot of paperwork on this truck that goes with thepurchase. The color of this 4Runner is striking and somewhatrare. The metallic colors were optional and not often seen. I was immediately drawn to the truck and purchased it over the phone. It is not the fastest truck and is not made forinterstate 80 mph cruising. If that is what you are looking for, then this truck is not for you. It has been my daily driver in the 4yrs I have owned it and have done maintenance and repair work when needed. It runs and drives wonderfully and I would not hesitate to take it anywhere. I have presented this truck to the potential buyer in an honest and fair manner to the best of my knowledge.
