It stayed rust free because Tucson, Arizona is so dry it's where the US Air Force retires all their old aircraft in a 10,000 acre desert bone yard so they can press them back into service if the need arises:https://www.abc15.com/news/state/the-boneyard-secret-airplane-graveyard-in-tucson-arizona HISTORY:This Hilux RV Camper was bought by the Spence family back in 1976 in Tucson, Arizona where it's lived ever since. Mr. Spence drove it only 37,900 miles until 2001 when he passed away. Mrs. Spence drove it another 2600 miles until November 2002 when the last tags expired and she put it into hibernation under her carport until last month when she asked me to "get it mechanically ready to drive coast to coast" as she was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and needs to sell to help offset medical bills. Her son's an old friend so being a vintage Toyota expert I agreed to help her get it back on the road and sell it for her.I've inspected it and here's what I found. MECHANICALS:This classic Toyota runs and drives as good as it lookswith absolutely zero drive train, steering, suspension or chassis issues. $1290 (receipt included) was spent last month getting it out of hibernation (and that doesn't include the new tires). Fuel tank was removed and sent out for hot tank refurbishment. There was no rust, just some funky old dried up gas residue. The carburetor was replaced with a rebuilt OEM unit from Toyota expert John at the Carb exchange in LA. (They use bronze bushings at the shaft seal which makes them run perfect). The fuel tank level sending unit was sent to a specialist in upstate NY for restoration and works like new. The electric in-tank fuel pump and strainer was replaced with new OEM spec. The fuel filter under the hood was replaced along with air filter, oil filter and motor oil. The coolant was flushed and replaced with new antifreeze. The brake and clutch master cylinders were flushed and bled. The transmission gear oil was changed along with the rear differential gear oil. The plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor were all cleaned and inspected to comfirm that although old they had been replaced only a few hundred miles earlier and showed no signs of cracking or deficiency. 20R (2.2L) ENGINE:Starts every time with a turn of the key. Runs like an industrial sewing machine. No smoke, no knocks, no leaks - just cool, smooth, quiet power. Surprisingly peppy. Because of their double row timing chain with metal guides these 20R's will routinely go 300k miles. And then after that, the blocks were so hardened with more nickle content than even old American muscle cars that one can typically just hone the cylinders without machine work, replace the pistons, timing chain and bearings and you've got an inexpensive rebuild ready for another 300k. AISINL43 4 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION:Factory Aisin 4 speed manual transmission shifts exceptionally tight and smooth as you expect with such low miles. No slop or synchro grinding. The clutch feel is excellent. The fluid is fresh. SUSPENSION,WHEELS and TIRES:The steering feels light & tight. The shocks work well and are not blown. No rattles, clunks or squeaks anywhere. The brake pads and shoes are robust on all 4 corners. The 4 tires are new radials on factory steel wheels. There's a spare stowed under the rear just like the factory pickup. The factory jack and tools are all there. DIFFERENTIAL:Tag shows a 4.10 gear ratio. No issues. Fresh gear oil. INTERIOR:Exceptionally nice and clean for the age. Cockpit is in amazing shape with near perfect door panels, seats and carpet. Gauges, lights and signals all work. Dash pad is not all blown out from sun damage like most this age but does have some thin cracking from heat. (Replacements sell new ones on ebay for around $85). Headliner is not torn but is coming loose in a couple places. The curtains and rods are all there but are getting threadbare as are the cloth straps that stow the canvas roll when tops's down but all that's easy & cheap to replace. The 2 interior incandescent light fixtures are missing but the wires are there just waiting for somebody to install modern LED out of principle. The top raises easily as designed and the canvas is not torn although the right rear corner has shrunk enough that it lost the ability to seal there (shown in picture). The radio and all the aplliances run off the secondary battery which sits in the empty tray on the driver's side under the hood (see start up video). A deep cycle works best in that location which buyer will need to install. The furnace and stove run off a 5 gallon portable side mount propane tank stowed in a compartment on the driver's side. Buyer will need to supply a new tank as the original one was long ago decertified. Mrs. Spence says that everything worked as designed when she last used it in the Fall of 2002 but obviously that was 17 years ago. To get a sense of the incredible versatility of these cabins here's an excellent video of a virtually identical Chinook that nicely illustrates how unique and well built these units are, not to mention the tons of potential to make them your own. If you're seriously considering this RV you won't want to miss this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnmbZzHTQc8 With those specific simple modifications the unit in that video is probably worth double the asking price of this unit which almost certainly has way less miles than that one, although I doubt the guy would sell it for that. Even the 610 page Operations & Service manual is still available for $20 here:https://www.ebay.com/itm/CHINOOK-MOTORHOME-MANUALs-600pgs-for-Toyota-RV-Operations-Maintenance-Service/133050333829?hash=item1efa6afa85:g:HuUAAOSw0IZZ11tV FRAME and BODY:Fully boxed factory steel frame is rust free exhibiting only the most minor surface rust. (For comparison it has considerably less surface rust then the 1977 example shown in the video above and that one was amazing.) Obviously this rust free vehicle has never been wrecked with original paint and no bondo or filler anywhere. EMISSIONS:This vehicle is emissions legal in all 50 states. The factory aspiration system has not been altered in any way and it still sports the "Non Catalyst" sticker (which means it wasn't born with a catalytic converter) to prove it. INSURANCE:This vehicle is eligible for historic plates in any state. That also means it's eligible for Collector Car insurance from outfits like Grundy Worldwide or Haggerty which costs only $12 per month for a $10,000 full coverage policy. That's right. A stated $10k full coverage collector car insurance policy is only $12 per month and emissions are forever waived. That's right. Collector Car insurance means dirt cheap rates for full coverage and no more emissions. PAPERWORK:Clean and clear notarized Arizona title is ready to go. The title shows the "A" status which in Arizona is the designation for "original miles". Receipts documenting the new parts and labor required to get it roadworthy after hibernation also included. More pictures are available upon request. INVESTMENT:Because of their exceptional engineering and reliability vintage Toyota Hilux pickups only go up in value every year even while you drive them, providing one of the best investments in the automotive world today, bar none. Fact is there will never be another made like them. They're 1 off legends, as important as American Muscle cars, and are getting exceptionally hard to find in this condition.Especially this example which can only be original once. The only Chinook to sell recently on ebay was a 1978 with 90k miles, had no pop-top, a leaky roof, extensive rust damage, and still sold for $4500:https://www.ebay.com/itm/1978-Chinook-Newport-/233138332635?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=WvbBaOeZ8vMsaR%252BaIfwXSo266zM%253D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=ncPoint is that if not now then soon this Hilux will be a bargain at twice the price. Don't believe it? Well a 1983 Hilux just sold for $55,000 at auction:https://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1983-TOYOTA-SR5-4X4-PICKUP-221930 OH WHAT A FEELING: There's many reasons Toyota trucks are so legendary worldwide. It's no accident that no matter what part of the world you look at whenever you see news footage of guerrilla fighter soldiers with AK47s in the back of a pickup it's always a Toyota. Just find a counter-example? That's because Toyota truck reliability is 2nd to none. It's what soldiers count on. That's why Toyota is the only import vehicle ever allowed to compete in NASCAR racing. I wouldn't hesitate to jump in this RV and drive it from Tucson to Bangor, Maine feeling confident it would need nothing but gasoline.
