This classic first-generation 1986 Toyota 4Runner DLX with 2.4L 22R-E electronically fuel-injected engine and manual five-speed overdrive transmission has low mileage for its age, and is among the cleanest remaining on the road. It has been well-maintained and is in great condition. The engine starts easily, runs quietly and smoothly; the transmission shifts smoothly and precisely. The 4WD was rarely used, and is therefore in near-mint condition. Four brand new Pathfinder Sport S AT LT235/75 R15 all-terrain tires (not shown in photos) are included in the sale, allowing this truck to be driven anywhere.
Factory options include AC (functional, original R12 system), AM/FM cassette radio (functional), variable-assist power steering, power brakes, tilt steering wheel, and adjustable interval wipers. Port-installed option package included divided rear seat and seat belts (not standard on the DLX), matching cloth seat covers, running boards (since replaced by SmittyBilt 3” step bars), and special Hurricane style wheels with larger tires.
Always located in Texas, and in the desert southwest(El Paso)from 1988 to 2009, this truck is virtually rust free. The original Toyota jack, tool kit, owner manual, and the owner’s well-used Toyota Truck and 4Runner 1986 Repair Manual are included with the purchase. Original purchase documents and receipts for all purchases, including professional engine rebuild and custom repaint, document thefull history of the truck andwill be included with the purchase.
This truck is in great shape mechanically since maintenance was done solely, andconscientiously,by the mechanical engineer owner for nearly 31 years. Oil and oil filter changes, air filter changes, and lubrication of chassis and driveline components were done at manufacturer recommended intervals using premium 10W40 motor oil(Pennzoil, Valvoline), Toyota filters, and molybdenum-disulfide lithium based grease. Manual locking hubs and wheel bearings were serviced and repacked at recommended intervals using Toyota parts. Original owner had complete rust treatment done to the truck pre-delivery.
The professionally rebuilt 22R-E engine in this truck is barely broken-in with less than 62,000 miles: An unfortunate timing chain failure at 116,420 miles in late 1993 required the engine be fully rebuilt by a certified Toyota dealer technician using all new Toyota parts. Engine was bored 0.020” oversize, and new pistons, rings, valves, water pump, reground crankshaft,crankshaft/rod bearings, and a complete new timing chain assembly (chain, sprockets, tensioner, dampers, and cover) were installed in the rebuild. A complete new clutch, hoses, drive belts, and throttle sensor were also installed with the rebuilt engine.
In preparation for sale, this truck has been fully serviced: All chassis and drive train grease fittings have been lubricated, oil and filter changed, new air filter installed, and brake/clutch hydraulic systems have been purged, fluid replaced and systems bled. The clutch master cylinder was also replaced to make this truck fully 100 percent complete mechanically. Steering linkage is tight and in good condition with factory-specified free-play.
A custom repaint using premium PPG acrylic urethane products was done in 2005. The original factory paint was sanded off, and one coat DP74LF epoxy primer and four coats ofPrimaK36 acrylic urethane sanding primer were applied. After block-sanding the primer coats, three top coats of ConceptDCC single-stageacrylic urethanein the originalToyota Red(Code 3D7, PPG 72574)were applied, the final coat being mixed 50/50 withConceptDCU clear to improve durability. The final finish was then color-sanded to remove orange peel and other imperfections. The fiberglass back cover, originallymatte red from the factory, now has the same paint coverage and gloss as the rest of the truck.
All originally black DLX parts, such as front grille, park light housings, door handles, door mirrors, B pillar trim, sliding window frames, tail light housings, and rear gate lock bar, were removed and refinished in body-color acrylic urethane to prevent future UV deterioration. Bumpers, bumper caps, side moldings, and stone guards were removed and refinished usingacrylic urethane inStrong Black, either satin or gloss. At the time of repaint, most weatherstrips, rubber bumpers, and plastic clips on doors, rear gate, and under the hood were also replaced, along with badges on the front grille and rear gate. After twelve years, the repaint is in great condition, and still has outstanding gloss retention (See photos).
This truck is set up for towing with a Valley Class III 2” X 2” receiver hitch (ball mount and ball not included), and a Kelsey electric trailer brake controller mounted under the dash. A properly designed and assembled electrical harness is permanently installed to a seven-wire weatherproof trailer connector mounted below the rear bumper.
A few minor issues should be expected for a 31 year old vehicle: Some interior plastic parts are showing UV deterioration; this has resulted in a couple of interior trim items being missing. The original dash cover has been covered with an aftermarket cap. (See photos.) The original mud-tolerant vinyl floor coverings are like new except for a small worn area in the driver-side foot well, and some isolated contact areas of wear and tear. The driver-side seat upholstery has minor wear (See photos). Headliner is in great shape except for one small, repaired tear. There are a few easily retouched surface defects in the paint, and four very small dings/dents in the driver-side door, hood, and tail gate (See photos). There is some superficial rust on the exterior passenger-side A pillar that was discovered during preparation for sale; otherwise, the truck is completely rust free. The power rear window functions only with the interior console switch.
