This is a single owner 1981 Toyota 4x4 Pickup. I purchased the truck new at Toyota of Berkeley, CA in spring 1981. It was my daily or weekend vehicle, driving about 6,000 miles a year until 2013. Just about the best vehicle I've ever owned and such fun to drive.
The truck has spent about 10 years in California, 4 years in Colorado, and the remainder years in Idaho. Since 2006 we have been using the family car mostly (for comfort) with the truck sitting idle except for monthly shopping or camping trips. We are now realizing that we don’t really have a direct need for a pickup except for the occasional need to haul something.
About the truck, the VIN is JT4RN38D0B0011410 with 165,692 miles. It is a 4 speed with a 22R 2.4L engine. Since it originally was produced for California, it has a California emissions package that has helped with it passing air quality checks in Idaho. Back in 1982 I installed a wiper delay control that was one of the best things I ever did, especially since it has worked flawlessly. I also installed an additional deep sounding horn with its own button located in the empty dashboard slot just to the right of the steering wheel. The stock horn works and has a new horn contact that was replaced in 2003.
Mechanically, the items I know need minor repairs are the
.) Emergency brake linkage needs adjustment.
.) Heat/cold temperature control – The wire that connects the driver’s slider knob with the heater core valve has rusted off. A new wire connector is needed to allow the driver to select hot and cold air temperatures.
.) Oil pressure gauge - Does not work. I don’t know if it’s a gauge, wiring, or oil pressure sending unit problem.
.) The truck has been idle since 2014 and will turn over and run when the carburetor is primed with gas but then stops due to not getting gas through the fuel lines. Maybe it's a fuel filter problem, a line problem, or pump problem, I'm not sure. I don't think it will take much to get it delivering fuel again, I just don't have the time to invest in this activity since I've decided to move it on to it's next owner, caretaker.
The truck has aluminum wheels with L235/75R15 Bridgestone Desert Dueler tires (10/32” tread depth). An all original spare tire & wheel, hydraulic jack, and tire changing irons included. Comes with a Stockland fiberglass camper shell and Line-A-Bed bed liner, purchased around 1982. Also included are extra, genuine Toyota, radiator hoses and belts that I carried for emergency use. This was a basic truck when I bought it, hence there is no air conditioning and comes with a bench seat which has been good for hauling three people in the cab.
It has never been in an accident and has a solid frame. It did have a run in with neighborhood kids that climbed on it and caused the round indents seen on the driver side roof. There is no stereo in it anymore but I do have a custom face-place that fits this year vehicle’s curved dash panel.
I have always enjoyed this truck without modifications and have tried to keep it as stock as possible. I am very meticulous and have a detailed folder on the trucks service records. The original 1981 radiator froze up in the center and it now has a 1985 Toyota pickup radiator. Also the alternator and water pump have also been replaced over the years. It had a new Midas muffler installed in 2005 and I have always been a non-smoker.
The engine has never been rebuilt and runs well. The oil was changed every 3,000 miles and lately it seems to use up about half a quart of oil every 3,000 miles. The brakes were overhauled in 2004 with the front hubs being repacked.
It has the original paint job with some surface rust on the main cab and bed. I have always had a cover over the seats but the driver side seat still split the vinyl with use (see attached pictures - It started snowing the next day when I took the seat cover off, so those are the white specks you see in the picture without the seat cover). Comes with original truck manuals and the official 1981 Toyota Pickup Repair Manual (approx 400+ pages with detailed pictures and service steps).
This is a no reserve auction, any successful bidder will be able to have this great truck. Buyer must pickup the truck or make shipping arrangements, full payment due within 3 days of the auction close (see Shipping and payments tab).
