**PLEASE READ ENTIRE DESCRIPTION**
Up for sale is a 1984 Subaru BRAT GL. The previous owner of this vehicle added many upgrades that I always considered to be desirable. The original 4 speed transmission was preplaced with a later model 5 speed, still maintaining the Hi/Lo range 4WD options. This allows the car to travel more comfortably at higher speeds without the engine sitting at higher revs. The original engine was rebuilt by Ram Racing Engines in Blackstock, South Carolina; it is now fuel injected and is controlled by a Simple Digital System EM-5.
The vehicle has also been modified with a SJR 4-inch body lift. The front struts were changed to coil-overs using the original strut, and were manufactured by “ground Control” in Shingle Springs, California. None of the body panels or wheel wells were cutout for the modification so it can be taken back to original ride height. It currently has 16-inch Toyota 6 lug rims, but the original 13-inch rims will be included in the sale as well.
While this car has about220,000 miles, the body is still in good condition. There are typical BRAT rust spots in the bed, as well a spot on the tailgate and drivers side door. Other than the rust locations the paint and decals are still in very good shape. The seats have been reupholstered and are currently in excellent shape, and the carpet is still original without blemishes. The rear sliding windows work as they should as well as the removable t-tops. The radio has been replaced but included is the original AM/FM radio which matches the blue console. The tow hitch and front brush guard are both original factory options.
Other included items include a Vista brand bed topper, and two pairs of jump seats each with their own set of seat belts.
To my understanding I am the third owner of this car; it was originally purchased in Indiana, transplanted to southern California where it lived most of its life, sold and transplanted to northern Illinois, where I purchased it and moved to northern Wisconsin. I can say for certain that between the previous owner and I it has almost always been garaged.
This BRAT will start and run however there does appear to be an electrical issue that will sometimes interfere with starting. It’s beyond my scope to diagnose and fix, and I have also not had it checked out professionally since I’ve been burned by that before. I will say that it seems to be running partially or entirely on battery power. I have tried replacing the alternator but continued having the same issue so my best guess is that there is a short somewhere. Towing is highly recommended if purchasing from outside of the area.
