1955 Studebaker President Sedan For consignment, a 1955 version of the Studebaker President. This is a so-called State Ultra Vista 4 door sedan due to its wrap around front and rear glass. Featuring a large low slung angled outward front grille, (shades of early aero design), nice big chrome bumpers, two tone paint, a trim spear and a classy look, you have arrived my friend..read on! Exterior Cascade Green is adorning the lowers and Chasta White the uppers of the car. Overall it presents nice, however on the cars lowers, particularly the door panels, we can see some previous rust repairs with body filler, and this has also begun to have underlying rust problems showing cracking and bubbling. The paint on the rest of the car retains its shine though, and this also holds true for the chrome on the bumpers. Starting with the one upfront, which frames the lower grille that has a swept back design to slice through the air. A central wide chevron has an S in its center and just above is a S T U D E B A K E R badge within the chrome grille top. In the center of the angled down hood is a stylized chromed jet flying off of the hood's front end. On either side are chromed spears that sit atop the front quarters and sport a plastic insert. Chrome bezels surround the front round single headlights on either corner and on each Cascade Green quarter a chromed trim spears begins and widens as it goes rearward. The gaps are pretty good, although the hood is a little off near the back at the wrap around chromed trimmed front glass. The B pillar is also green and just above is a Chasta White roof. This continues to cover the C-pillar, the rear wrap around glass, the rear quarter uppers, the trunk and rear of the car. The delineation is the continuation of the trim spear which ever widens and becomes a small stainless panel on the rear quarters, adhered just below the rear door handle. The back of the car is equally impressive as it has vertical tail lights capping the end of rounded over rear quarter tops. Wide chrome bezels are wrapping the tail lights and another shiny chromed bumper is below. A few badges are attached to the trunk and the car rolls on 7.10-15 wide whitewall tires which have blunt pointed spun moon caps with gold central badges, and 15-inch red wheels peeking out from the edges. Interior Lets explore the mind of the Studebaker mid 50's designer with a swing of the doors. Here we see them in action with a silver sill which changes quickly over to a stitched square pattern broadcloth. This cloth is in a mostly tan colorway, but it has a very small darker brown square pattern making larger squares. The actuators and window cranks have a super modern look to them and are a satin gold. These are mounted in a textured gold panel on the doors next to the padded armrest. The doors lowers are in red carpeting for some snappy contrast. As we move inside we see a full front bench that uses the square on square pattern for the seat coverings. These also have the added feature of a few large rectangles being stitched into the seat and back. The front bench sits in a red broadcloth covered tub. A rear bench matched beautifully and has a central fold down armrest. The rear doors use the broadcloth and gold inserts as well and red carpeting floods the floors and is very clean. Upfront we have a large bakelite white and silver steering wheel rim and a circular chromed horn ring with a central S badge in plastic. A silver vinyl padded blunt nosed dash front is on top of the metal dash and is a first sign of a safety concern with its blunt design and padding. As we move to the dash front, we see a gold panel that houses vertical aligned groups of 3 pulls and knobs and two central round gauges behind the steering wheel. In the center is a large Studebaker badge and a wide rectangular rounded blunt nosed vent below. An ashtray and a clock are all mounted just prior to scanning to the passengers side where there is a glovebox. Very tastefully done, but it is a President which was the high end Studebaker for this year. A nice cream headliner is above and shows little wear or smudging. Drivetrain Under the hood in a fully restored Cascade Green painted engine bay sits the factory original 259ci V8. It has some gold accents on the likes of which are the air cleaner system, valve coverings, and oil filler cap. The rest of the engine and block are near perfect black. This 259 cuber has a 4-barrel carburetor and a Borg Warner Detroit Gear 3 speed automatic on back with a 3.54 geared rear axle. All wiring and other bolt ons are like factory under this hood. Undercarriage Underneath we note black undercoating and paint on the frame and floor pans. There is very slight surface rust but it's very spotty. A stick single exhaust is on, and front independent coil springs provide the ride as do rear leaf springs. Drum brakes are on all 4 corners. Drive-Ability The car fires right up, and off I went to the test track in presidential style! I tested the panic stop first and it passed with flying colors. The car accelerated smoothly and handled nicely. The interior is comfy and a few frowns reared their heads in the form of a non-working horn, brake lights, clock and fog lights that were all silent and dark. A not oft seen example in fact the first here for my career at Classic auto Mall. After 5,856 cars that's saying something..like there was not one here yet! All good, and all snazzy innovative mid 50's design which we would come to expect and love from the washing machine company that also made cars! Who'd of thought?!
