1962 STUDEBAKER GRAN TURISMO HAWK for sale. Appeared on the back cover of the March 2018 issue ofTurning Wheels.Actual mileage unknown but it shows 64,400 miles.I purchased it in 2016 with 60,300 miles on it.No history is available prior to the previous Florida owner but all receipts are available from the present and previous owner. The production order shows that it was originally assembled in South Bend and sold to dealer Lloyd Pearson in Pasadena, CA, in late April 1962, so it’s equipped with a PCV valve and alternator.I’ve owned six Studebakers in about 50 years and this one is one of my favorites.
Engine- The previous owner spent over $11,000 just in parts for the two-barrel smooth-running full flow 289 V-8 and it is completely rebuilt with new crank, pistons, valves, cam and many other new parts. The mechanical fuel pump was replaced with an electric pump.It has an automatic transmission and the power steering unit has been rebuilt.New water pump and thermostat were installed in 2017 and the block flushed.
Brakes, Tires, Other– A complete brake rebuild in 2017 with new drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, internal parts and hoses. The tires are 2015 215R75-15 white wall radials with Ford 15” x 6-1/2” rims. The exhaust system replaced in 2016 with mellow-sounding mufflers and aluminized pipes.(4) new shocks in 2011.
Exterior- The body is Velvet black on the bottom and metallic silver on top (not factory). There are a few areas of bubbling in four corners from previous bodywork that could be addressed. No rust in the body pans or frame. All stainless is in good condition and the chrome bumpers are excellent.A trunk-mounted radio antenna is installed.
Interior- The car was re-upholstered in red vinyl but red velour inserts were put into the seats. The white headliner is excellent.New red carpeting, rebuilt sun visors and a repro rear view mirror in 2016.Dash gauges have LED bulbs. The radio is non-factory.
A cold-blowing factory A/C unit had been installed -- converted to R-134a.The engine does not over-heat during hot summer weather. The car has the Climatizer heater and defroster. It’s a reliable, smooth-running GT, not a show car or “trailer queen.”It gets a lot of attention at local car shows.Age and health prevent me from keeping the car and I’d like to see it go to a good home.
