This car is a 1948 Studebaker Commander (A15). The body style is Regal DeLuxe Land Cruiser (Y5 ). It was donated to the Rock River Valley Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club by the family of deceased member Charles Smith. It is being offered for sale to the general public and the funds it brings will go into the general treasure of the Club.
When we took possession of the car, it did not run and the brakes were not working. The club repaired the rear brakes (the fronts were working and not locked up), replaced the spark plugs, adjusted the points, and partly disassembled and cleaned the carb. Replaced the battery with a good used one, and put a used generator and voltage regulator on.
It now starts, the charging system works, the engine runs smoothly without any smoking. It runs with five gallons of fresh gas from the gas tank. It has a working 6 volt electric fuel pump under the hood.
One of our member described the car as a drive-able project. In other words, one could drive this car to car shows and meeting while you continue to make improvements.
Note: A minimal amount of time and expense was put into getting the car running and we strongly suggest that the buyer drain and replace all the fluids in the car and replace the belts and tires and most likely the rims before attempting to drive the car very far. This car set without being driven for nearly five years.
The only known defect with the car is that the emergency brakes are not hooked up as a result of the work the club did to the back brakes. However, this is actually an easy fix for a decent mechanic.
General Condition of the Car:
The pot metal trim parts are slightly below driver quality with fairly heavy pitting except for the front fender spears which seem to be slightly above driver quality. The bumpers, bumper guards, and bumper accessories are slightly above driver quality. (See the photos for more detail).
The paint is discolored and has significant amount of scratches across most of the car.
The sheet metal is fairly solid, especially the floor and trunk panels with four areas where the paint is blistering up indicating some type of trouble (see the photo's for more details). As this car was Studebakers top line car, extra undercoating and tar paper was applied to the floors and trunk which is most likely why the car is so solid in the floor and trunk areas.
The interior is complete and original, however it is significantly water stained and has two minor tears . The steering wheel is cracked and discolored, the horn ring driver quality, but the horn button is slightly above driver quality. The door panels are complete, but the wood grain on the fronts are in need of restoration. The dash and instruments seem above average and may clean up quite well. (see the photos for more details).
The car is being sold as is as shown with no warranty express or implied.
A initial payment of $250.00 (non refundable earnest money) via paypal will be required within 48 hours of the close of the auction. The balance in cash will be required in order to take possession of the car at it's current location near Milton WI. The car must be picked up or transportation arranged by the buyer. The seller will not arrange transportation. Upon final payment the buyer will be provided with a clear Illinois State Car Title.
