SUMMARY
Authentic CSX4000 continuation Cobra that's logged only 121 milesIf you're a car enthusiast, you know all about the iconic empire built by Shelby's legendary Cobra. From 6-figure originals to fiberglass replicas, the word "Cobra" can represent anything from a sinuous boulevard cruiser to a hardcore track star. With that in mind, every dynasty has a Sultan, and, for the Cobra, that Sultan is a classic like this spectacular Shelby CSX4000. Commissioned by Shelby American of Las Vegas, Nevada, this all-aluminum beast combines storied heritage with killer looks, excellent build quality and unbeatable provenance. If you're searching for a fresh twist on an old favorite, forget about project cars pieced together from leftovers. And forget about sloppy replica builds that shame their fabled predecessors. Call your friends at RK Motors Charlotte and pick up this razor-sharp roadster. It's pristine, rare and ready to rock and roll!
HISTORY/CONDITION
In 1965, amid stiff competition and whimsical homologation rules, Shelby attempted a total domination of the FIA GT series by installing a massive Ford 427 in a completely re-engineered AC chassis. While this creation was a bit crude at the time, it possessed all the organically frightening charm of a bare-knuckle collector car. And, even though initial public sales were a bit of a letdown, authentic 427 S/C's would eventually bring millions at auction. Today, over 50 years later, big block Cobras are some of the most valuable cars ever produced. And in the mid-1980s, Las Vegas's Shelby American decided to honor the icon by authorizing a lightly updated generation dubbed CSX4000.
Like most premier classics, a great story is part of this Shelby's standard equipment. In 2006, when the car's first owner saw Carroll Shelby in the lobby of a West Palm Beach hotel, he lamented his decision not purchase a Cobra back in the '60s. Shelby's reply was predictably cool. With the quick passing of a business card, he simply said "We still make them". And the rest, as they say, is big-bore, high-octane history!
Beginning life as hand-formed aluminum, CSX4378 is a registry-listed gem that, completed in 2007, took roughly three years to assemble. That assembly was dressed in sinister Shelby Black 2-stage, which was augmented with black lifts, a small scoop, a chrome roll bar, a polished fuel filler and chrometrimmed glass. And today, rolling only 121 miles since its documented debut, this classy Cobra strikes a perfect balance between outrageous looks, serious performance and excellent attention to detail.
ENGINE
Twist the car's chrome hood ties and you'll find an all-aluminum 'Side Oiler' that builds on the all-aluminum body's theme of performance at all costs. Balanced and built specifically for this Cobra, that monster mill features an increased bore that nets a whopping 482 cubic inches of Ford power! At the top of the buff powerplant, a finned air cleaner feeds twin Holley 4-barrels that are tethered to an aluminum intake. At the sides of those carbs, aluminum heads ride beneath finned Shelby valve covers. At the front of those heads, an MSD distributor sequences spark between an aftermarket coil and loomed Taylor Spiro Pros. Beneath those wires, application-specific headers roll charred dinosaurs in to ceramic-coated side-pipes. In front of those headers, billet pulleys spin a modern alternator next to an aluminum Shelby water pump. And, speaking of water, a big Fluidyne radiator utilizes silver tubes to circulate coolant around two pusher fans, a large SPAL puller fan and a color-keyed expansion tank. You'll be happy to know that the clean V8 has been properly seated in a satin aluminum bay. You'll be excited to see that first-rate detailing, like stainless fluid lines, a color-keyed breather, chrome dress-up items and a coated fuel pump, rounds out a very impressive engine display. And you'll be delighted to know that, on October 25th, 2007, Keith Craft Racing Engines dyno-ed this raucous engine at 705 horsepower and 653 lb./ft. of torque!
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
One of the best things about buying a professionally built, Shelby-designed Cobra is the impressive hardware underneath. Fully sorted and completely detailed, this sub-2,400-pound roadster's 4-inch tube frame and fully independent suspension are ready to hit the toughest track you can find. The buff 427 twists torque to a tough Tremec TKO600 5-speed. At the corners, vented discs combine with dual-piston Shelby calipers to provide confidence-inspiring stops. Modern rack-and-pinion steering makes low speed parking almost as easy as high speed sweeps. Power meets the pavement via Shelby-branded knock-offs, which spin 26.5x8.0-15 Goodyear Eagle Sport Car Specials in front of 26.5x10.5-15 Goodyear Eagle Sport Car Specials. And everything, from the car's aluminum floors and coil-over shocks to its Aviaid oil pan and 32-gallon fuel cell, looks essentially brand new.
INTERIOR
Sporting famed "Ferrari's Ass is Mine" aesthetics, this roadster's leather-lined interior is a welcome departure from the 'coal pit black' cockpits found between most Cobra's doors. Firm bucket seats stretch tight hides between 2-point Simpson safety harnesses. In front of those seats, a leather-wrapped dash founds requisite Smiths telemetry between a polished mirror, a small plaque and a Shelby-signed wind wing. At the sides of that dash, lightweight doors hang more tan leather in front of traditional chrome handles. Below those doors, optional wool carpet floats Shelby-branded mats beneath billet pedals, a polished hand brake and an authentic Top Loader shifter. In front of the driver, a wood-rimmed steering wheel spins polished spokes around a vivid Shelby horn button. And behind the passengers, a surprisingly spacious trunk is fully finished in supple wool carpet.
