Real Deal 1966 Shelby GT 350. Numbers matching car. See photos #9 (engine bay) and #11 (engine block) for Ford numbers and photos #10 and #12 for Shelby numbers. In the SAAC 65/66 Shelby GT 350 Registry. Ford VIN number stamped in three separate locations in engine bay sheet metal. Original Shelby VIN stamping next to right hand shock turret (photo #10). According to the SAAC Registrar, he Ford VIN number IS the correct number to fit with the Shelby VIN number.
ALL OF THE ENGINE BAY SHEET METAL IS ORIGINAL
The mileage reading quoted above is NOT accurate. It is NOT a low mile car. It hasn't gone around yet, ut I don't have the exact mileage written down anywhere. Ebay demands you insert something in the field....It has had, aybe, 0 miles put on the car since 1980.. All of those in the last few months!
Originally sold in North Carolina and last road registered there in 1979. North Carolina Inspection decal from 1979 is still in place on the windshield. In storage since 1979/80. Purchased in about 2010/11 by a dealer in Boston, a. I purchased the car for my client in December2012 in Boston and had the car shipped to Washington state.
Original Shelby order # 660486 shows SFM6S798 ordered by Young Motor Co., tonewall & Brevard, harlotte, .C. Options included a full set of 10 spoke alloy wheels and folding rear seat. This car NEVER had LeMans stripes. Shelby invoice # A1992 confirms the above order number and lists one standard equipment GT 350 with optional wheels and rear seats, nbsp;freight inclusive at $3880.75. The color on the invoice is noted as "Blue". I have copies of both documents.
The SAAC Registry provides the following information: Sold initially to William Metcalf, r. 5/19/66. Sold 5 months later to Billy Dean Hollyfield. The car was repossessed in March of 1967. Sold to Ralph Hannah in 5/67 and repossessed again shortly thereafter! Sold next to James Blevins 12/67.(His name was on a plaque affixed to the tail light panel when I purchased the car). Purchased by Jerry Owneby in 1973. The last private party to own the car was Dan Maples who purchased the car in August of 1999. It would appear he never drove the car.
I have recent correspondence between myself and the SAAC 65/66 GT 350 Registrar (Howard Pardee) that I will pass along to seriously interested parties.
When purchased, he car was largely original and had NEVER been apart, ut had some rust damage that is very common to Mustangs of this vintage. The heater plenum, eft rear wheel arch, eft rear floor (behind the drivers seat) and the trunk drop off panels all had some damage. All areas were repaired properly. I can supply photos of the repairs in progress to seriously interested parties. All of the engine bay panels are the originals, ll of the structural elements of the car are original. The vast majority of all of the sheet metal is original to the car with the exception of what I have noted above. I have detailed photos of every repair made to the body shell before the car was put in primer.
This car received a bare metal re-spray in its original color of Sapphire Blue. All of the products used are/were manufactured by PPG. The base/color is PPG DCCConcept basecoatand the clear is PPG Concept Clear. I spent quite a lot of time making sure that I had the color correct as Sapphire Blue is NOT a normal Mustang color. In the end I matched the new paint to a section under the dash pad inside the car that had not seen the light of day since 1966.As this car was not delivered with the Lemans stripes I elected not to paint them. This was an "extra" that Shelby actively tried to discourage.Restorers are often surprised to find that the correct paint code for the "white" stripes isa GM (Chevrolet) commercial color!! The underside of the car is correctly finished in red oxide primer. (PPG DP 74 red oxide epoxy primer) As all 65-67 Shelby's were built from San Jose sourced Mustang shells there is no undercoating on these cars originally.
The car retains ALL of its original Shelby specific parts. It has the original numbers matching engine, mall letter Shelby intake, orrect Holley carb (original to the car), riginal dual point distributor, eaders, lloy oil pan, tc, tc..... All of the hose clamps, oses, elts, park plug leads, tc.are correctly marked/date coded.
Being an early car, his car has the over ride traction bars and the original, nd VERY rare, rubber sealing boots arepresent. This car also has an extremely rare all steel hood. I have already heard groans from a couple of people..."they were all fiberglass"... Those people who are in the know, now better. There was a short run of these all steel hoods that were an experiment in cost savings. Shelby experienced severe paint adhesion issueswith these hoods and the decision was made to stick with the "plastic" hoods. When I bought the car the paint was peeling off of the hood...Shelby was right!!
The engine was completely rebuilt and balanced. The mains and rods are at .010, ylinders are .030 over. The only engine part replaced besidesthe normal rebuild parts was thetiming cover due to electrolytic damage at the water pump ports. (very common Ford small block issue) As stated above, every Shelby part on the engine is the original item that came with the car when new (valve covers, ntake, arb, il pan, istributor, ir cleaner). The distributor is STILL fit with dual points as original, all me a luddite, ut if your electronic ignition dies in the middle of nowhere, nbsp;points are easy to find, ew distributors... maybe not. The Ford VIN number is stamped on theengine block and it matches the car's Ford issued VIN number. The heads are the originals.I had hard seats installed to be compatible with unleaded fuel. All of the valves are new as are the valve springs. Of course, he timing gears and chain are new, s are the lifters. The cam was found to be fine and only required a light polish. (I had it inspected by Delta in Washington).
The BW Super T10 gearbox has been rebuilt with new bearings, yncros and seals. I did replace the bellhousing as the original was broken along the bottom of the casting and at the clutch pivot. This was likely the reason that the car was parked in 1979. The replacement bellhousing is the correctalloy part with the correct Ford part number (an original part). This gearbox has a cast iron case which is documented as correct for this range of chassis numbers. The clutch is, f course, rand new (pressure plate, isc, hrow out bearing) and the flywheel was re-surfaced.
The entire braking system is either new or remanufactured. All new steel lines and flex lines and a correct, ew, aster cylinder. Rebuilt prop. valve, ebuilt, riginal, alipers with stainless pistons, ew rotors. The rear brakes feature new wheel cylinders along with new metallic shoes (manufactured by special order), new hardware kit and the original, helby specific, rake drums. A new e-brake cable completes the system.
Likewise, nbsp;the suspension and steering have been attended to. All wearing parts have been replaced. This includesEVERY rubber part in both the front and rear of the car. Correct Koni shocks are fit,as original, n all 4 corners with the correct cable limit straps on the rear axle. The rear springs have been replaced. New lower control arms and upper ball joints have been fit up front and the Shelby specific idler arm was retained and re-bushed.The steering box required nothing but a good cleaning. I did replace all of the tie rod ends as well. The original over ride traction bars have been re-bushed and the original rubber sealing boots are still with the car and installed... None of the B*S* fiberglass covers...
The rear axle was cleaned and new bearings and seals installed. It has an "open" differential. It is the large bearing pinion type and the original differential/axle assy. for the car. The diff section is correctly painted red oxide. The pinionsnubber mount and leaf spring plates are correctly finished in bare steel with a protective coating.
All of the fuel lines are new. The gas tank and sender are new as well. All of the rubber fuel lines are the original type with "gas" stenciled on the hose. All of the hose clips are the correct type as well. The carb was completely rebuilt.
All of the "soft" surfaces of the interior are new. There was mold and mildew damage that I was not comfortable passing along to a new owner. The seats were completely stripped and the frames bead blasted and re-painted. The seats were then rebuilt properly with correct foams and burlap as original. The carpets, door panels, ash padand headliner are also new, ade from the correct materials in the correct patterns. All of the plastic, iberglass and metal parts in the interior are the original parts with the exception of the plastic surrounds for the rear qtr. windows. They were warped and cracked, did save them and they will go with the car.The car retains its original tachometer and the Shelby issued "Ray Brown" seat belts are installed.
All of the glass is the original, ate coded, arts that were installed when the car was built. All of the chrome and stainless is original to the car with the exception of the bumpers which were reproductions when the car was purchased.
The car is riding on its original 10 spoke Shelby wheels, here is a fifth in the trunk for the spare. The correct tube wrench and bar for the lug nuts is stowed under the spare along with the jack. The wheels are shod with BF Goodrich Radial T/A's as I didn't feel that bias ply's were the best choice for actually driving the car!If you have to fit them, ou can, F you buy the car!!!
All of the electrical components are original to the car. All of the wiring, auges, nd switches. everything works as it should. The Shelby supplied tach on the dash is original to THIS car and is functional. I left it alone. It has a slightly faded face which lends it an undisputed air of originality!! All of the gauges are original as well, did replace the clear plastic front panel of the cluster as it was slightly "foggy".
From the above description it can be seen that this car has always been Sapphire Blue. It has always been a 4 speed car, ND it was never a renta-racer. If you are interested is a real Shelby and not a tribute or a clone, rop me a line or give me a call. I have lots of pictures which I am happy to send to honestly interested parties.
I believe I have completely, nd fairly, escribed the current condition AND the repairs performed on this car. I am sure this is one of the lengthier descriptions that you are likely to see! I do not want an interested party to feel that I have misrepresented the car in any respect. I do not sell cars for a living (nor do I want to!)and generally have found that the entire purchase of a car can be an extremely unpleasant experience. I do not want anybody to come away from this experience anything but happy and satisfied.
