What is better than one neutral? Five neutrals! Okay, that’s a bad joke.
This poor Saab left the factory saddled with the ancient Borg Warner automatic that was honestly doing just fine until a previous owner erred and filled it with motor oil instead of Type F transmission fluid. It did not kill the transmission right away, but its days were certainly numbered. After a long hibernation under the care of another previous owner, I did fill the transmission with the correct fluid and was able to log nearly 232 miles before the pump (I am pretty sure it was the pump) elected to leave this mortal coil. I had purchased it with the understanding that this super clean shell was in need of a transmission replacement (and that was the plan,) but you know how the saying goes regarding mice and men.
If you're unfamiliar with classic Saabs then just know that it's quite difficult to fix or even replace the automatic transmission with another--unless you have a known good T37 lying around, of course--so this is definitely a project for someone who really wants the Saab 900 experience with a car that is--as far as I can tell--free of rust.
Seriously. If you require photographic proof beyond the photos I have provided, please do not hesitate to message me.
The good:
-super clean shell, lived most of its life in Texas. Given its condition, I do not believe it endured Ohio's obsession with salt.
-no accident damage from what I can see
-comes with a huge load of spares: stock steel rims, spare turn signal lenses, brake lamp lenses, headlight bits, an entire catback exhaust system (po purchased, I never did test fitment so...) spare steering wheel, dashboard components, a tune up kit and so many other Saab bits and bobs. There's a decent amount of stuff, rest assured!
-Addco rear sway bar, new, never installed, comes with hardware
-good headliner, relatively tidy interior (door cards are off in the photos but are present, they just need the fabric reglued)
-the engine runs well despite a yet to be determined vacuum leak
-tires are less than a year old (old tires were shot) with fewer than 300 miles on them mounted on Saab 9000 wheels
The meh:
-the aforementioned transmission woes
-car had a repaint, not a good one, either. Definitely showing its age and peeling on the hood
-little dents all over the place. Seriously, someone was not a great driver. I'm not a body expert, but I'd have to assume a good deal could be taken out with PDR
-hood is full of stone chips that someone attempted to cover up with touch-up paint
-Someone decided to add a wing from an S or turbo and did so with... Liquid Nails. The hatch still wears the scars (I have the wing still should you want it, though for the love of God do not use Liquid Nails...)
-Odometer did stop working sometime in the last 33 years, though it was repaired and is working now, it will show up as a mileage discrepancy. Round it up and say the car has 300,000 miles on it.
-AC compressor lacks a belt so I'm going to assume that means it's kaput.
-Engine definitely has a vacuum leak, though it doesn't set a check engine light. Idles warm around 1.7k.
-typical Saab maladies: cracked dash, peeling dash inlay, instrument lights inop, etc.
-battery will not hold a charge, though it will start when jumped.
I am sure there are things I am missing, so please please please do not hesitate to ask me questions. I encourage it! I realize that this is not exactly a BaT-caliber car, but as an enthusiast I am more than happy to do what I can to make sure this Saab ends up in good hands. This is definitely a good car to serve as a torch carrier for a forlorn Saab that saw too many a winter. These are not getting any more common, so do the community a favor and buy this gem. (How's that for a sales pitch? I won't quit my day job.)
