1985 Saab 900 Additional Info:
This is a very rare beautifully preserved (original paint!) first year 1985 900 SPG. The 1985's were the only SPG with the "flat nose" (hood/headlights/grille). They were sold for a $3,000 premium over 900 turbo's and had exclusive badging, the air-flow body kit, anti-sway bars, fog lamps, an electric sunroof etc. All 1985 SPG's were Black with Sierra tan leather interiors. Less than 1,500 were sold.
I acquired this car two years ago for my car collection from the original owner, a retired American military officer who purchased the car new off the showroom floor in Heidelberg Germany through the U.S Diplomat sales program. In Europe the car was called the "Turbo 16 Aero" but in the states it has always been called the SPG (Special Performance Group). According to the 80 year old original owner, this SPG has never been through a car wash! ... the beautiful paint reflects a lifetime of meticulous maintenance, clay bar/waxing and continuous garage storage.
A thick file folder of service records and receipts come with the car including original dealer sales sheet and an ultra rare leather bound brochure exclusive to the Saab International Military and Diplomat sales program.
The original owner brought the car back to the states in 1990 (California) and later moved to Tennessee. Import paperwork is in the file folder. Now garage stored in Central Virginia. This SPG has crossed the Alps, traveled the Autobahn, driven the California coast to Big Sur and cruised along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
In 2012, the car was essentially retired from frequent driving, garage stored and only about 9,000 miles have been added in the past eight years.
In 2008 all interior carpet, the headliner and leather seats were replaced. The new Euro sourced leather seating surfaces match the original factory perforated design in Sierra tan except for the handsome black piping edging and custom SPG logo embroidered into the front seat headrests (see photo's). The interior still looks brand new with no wear to speak of. It even smells new.
Over the past 35 years and 255,000 miles the following major items have been replaced with new Saab parts. Here's a brief overview of the "most recent" updates:
shocks, brake rotors, pads, calipers 18k miles agoengine (timing chain, crankshaft etc) in 2008air conditioning system (all new system w/134 in 2017)full exhaust systemTurbocharger, head gasket and power steering replaced less than 10k miles ago
Blemishes: The original dash, while excellent and original, has a few typical cracks in the usual spots near the edge of the front top speakers (but none are more than 1 inch in length). A small area of rust occurred under the passenger seat from an old a/c leak from under the dash... this was only discovered when the carpet was replaced and was professionally repaired. The car is otherwise rust free. Many years ago the passenger door lock was popped, repaired and spot sprayed... you need to get within an inch or two of the car to find the area in question. The clock is not operable.
I have owned three Saab SPG's over the past 20 years and this one is far and away the best one and of course, the first year '85's are especially distinctive and the hardest ones to find. I doubt many still exist with original paint in this condition. The doors close like a bank vault, and it drives down the road like a true European Sports car. I will miss it when it is gone.
I am selling a few cars from my collection that don't get as much road time as some others. Serious offers considered. Happy to answer any questions sent via email through Ebay. Personal inspections encouraged. Fly in and drive it home or I am happy to work with your shipper or can recommend a shipper I have been using for the past ten years.
