1982 Bremen Sterling Kit Car – VW Powered – Rare Exotic Head-Turner – Runs & Drives
If you're looking for a car that gets more attention than a Ferrari at your local gas station, this is it.
For sale is my 1982 Bremen Sterling, one of the most distinctive kit cars ever produced. Built on a Volkswagen chassis and powered by an air-cooled VW engine (believed to be Karmann Ghia sourced), this car starts easily, runs well, and is an absolute blast to drive.
I've owned and enjoyed this Sterling for years, primarily taking it out on weekends and occasional cruises. I've even driven it approximately 150 miles to the beach without any issues. Everywhere it goes, people stop to ask questions, take pictures, and tell stories. It's nearly impossible to stop for gas without attracting a crowd.
Unfortunately, after back surgery, getting in and out of the Sterling's low cockpit has become increasingly difficult for me. My wife is also currently undergoing chemotherapy, so the time has come to let someone else enjoy this incredible car while allowing us to focus on more important priorities.
Highlights
Condition
This is a 40+ year-old specialty/kit vehicle, so please don't expect a perfect show car. It has been a fun and dependable weekend driver for me, but there are items that a new owner will want to address.
A new wiring harness was installed approximately three years ago; however, some electrical issues remain and will need to be sorted out. Currently, the turn signals and brake lights are not functioning. I'm disclosing this upfront so prospective buyers know exactly what they're considering.
Mechanically, the car has been dependable for me. It starts easily, runs well, and I still drive it periodically around my neighborhood to keep everything exercised.
The paint presents well overall for its age. It isn't perfect, but I believe a good professional buff and detail would make a noticeable improvement.
Registration / Current Driving Status
The car is not currently registered for road use. I allowed the registration to expire approximately two years ago after my back condition made it increasingly difficult to get in and out of the car.
Because of that, I cannot take it onto public roads simply to make driving videos. I do periodically drive it around my neighborhood/property so it doesn't sit unused.
The current start-up/running video was taken just recently, so buyers can see and hear the car as it is today.
Why Buy a Sterling?
Bremen Sterling kit cars don't come up for sale very often, and their dramatic canopy design still looks like something straight out of a science-fiction movie.
People stare, wave, ask questions, take pictures, and occasionally want a selfie with the car. If you enjoy owning something that virtually nobody else at the local cruise-in or car show will have, this is it.
I'm asking $6,699 or best reasonable offer. I've invested considerably more in the car over the years than my asking price, but I'm realistic about the fact that it is a 40+ year-old specialty vehicle with a few items still needing attention.
This could be a great car for a VW enthusiast, Sterling fan, kit-car collector, or someone looking for a unique weekend cruiser and a manageable project they can continue improving over time.
Serious inquiries are welcome. Additional photos and recent walk-around/start-up videos are available upon request.
VIN NOTE: This is a specialty/kit vehicle with a non-standard VIN. The vehicle has a valid title showing VIN [VT314677]. eBay's automated VIN system does not recognize the vehicle's non-standard VIN, so the VIN field has been populated as required to allow the listing to be created. The actual VIN shown above is the VIN appearing on the vehicle title.
