This is a 1955 BECK Spyder, a replica of the Porsche 550 Spyder. Special Edition, INC. (www.http://beckspeedster.com/) built this car and went to great lengths to make this 550 Spyder Replica look as close to the original 550 Spyder as possible. This includes identical Bosch Horns as used on the original 550, gauges pulled from a 914 and refaced by Palo Alto Speedometer to look like original 550 Spyder gauges, foot pedals produced by Alloy Cars, INC, that are exact copies of the original, Bendix fuel pumps that are not actually functional, but are installed as they were on chassis 550-74. The handbrake and shift box are exact replicas, Barberpole vinyl from SMS was used for the seats, rear leather latches are identical to the original 550 Spyder, and the alloy wheels were built specifically for this car. They are 16x4.5 instead of 16x3.5 on the original and are made of aluminum. These wheels were designed by Boyd Coddington and built by his son, Chris. These wheels wear 16" Excelsior Stahl Sport bias-ply looking radial tires in 16x5.5 by Croker tire.
This particular BECK Spyder was built with a 2160CC "78x94" air-cooled flat 4 with 2246 camshaft, super pro heads, 48 IDF Weber carbs, lightweight flywheel, stage-1 Kennedy clutch, full flowed, 1-1/2qt oil sump, magnaspark ignition and 9:1 compression ratio. The result is around 160 hp at the crank. Since the car was built, it has done 10,901 miles. The oil has been changed 5 times (each time the valves were adjusted), throttle cable changed, throttle pedal reinforced, CB performance box installed, oil breather fabricated and changed, new flywheel, new Tilton starter, VW valve covers installed, exhaust ceramic coated dark grey, and the car was raised 0.5 inches.
