1974 Porsche 914 Additional Info:

This 914 is normally a great driver but needs some engine work. One cylinder has lost compression and I can hear chirping coming from it. I took both the heads to a machine shop and had the valves redone and had them resurfaced. The chirping continues. This leads me to believe a case stud is pulling out and the proper head torque cannot be maintained. A case saver needs to be installed at a machine shop to correct this issue. I would have done this but unfortunately my wife and I are driving the Pan American highway and we have a renter in our place. Due to that we need to remove this vehicle and I can't take the time to fix it. :( It's too bad because it was very, very fun to drive.
I doubt the milage is original. The odometer stops at 99,999 so it may very well (I'd say almost certainly) have rolled over at some point since 1974.
Some things done with the car:- A better gauge put in the left side for oil temperature- New yellow Koni shocks all around- Front and rear brakes replaced and SS lines added- New-ish tires with less than 2k miles- Front to back through the frame fuel lines replaced as well as the solid lines in the engine compartment- Riveria wheels- Electronic ignition- Well working stock fuel injection system- A real head turner- Clean no rust heck hole area (for those of you who know 914s, you know what I'm talking about)- Alpine stereo in front glove box maintaining the "decoy" stock stereo- Lots of spare parts as one tends to accumulate owning an old car
The bad stuff:- Engine issue as mentioned above- At some point before I owned it, it had been in an accident and the rear clip was replaced with one from an earlier 914. The car drives well and straight and the welds are solid. For whatever reason this seems to be a not uncommon repair with these cars. The upshot is that the rear trunk jack mount is incorrect and the stock 1974 retractable seatbelts do not fit- Some minor rust repair was done underneath the car where new sheet metal was welded in (see pictures)- Minor scratches, chips when viewed up close- One relay port for the round relays in the main fusebox is bad. These can be purchased from Pelican Parts or Auto Atlanta. For now a temporary relay is wired in and works correctly (see pictures).- Driver's outside CV boot needs to be replaced
I've tried to give an accurate description of this vehicle. It is hard to let you know how fun this is to drive and if we were not planning on being out of the country for an extended period I would definitely have fixed this engine issue myself. My loss is your gain. The 914 was a joint venture between VW and Porsche and I like to joke that it handles like a Porsche but accelerates like a VW. :) This car is seriously fun to drive and feels very solid when cornering. If you like taking turns at speed, or even better yet, autocross, then these cars are for you.
