The MSRP was $38,581. This is equivalent to $107,608 in today’s money.
The first owner was Joe Sanchez of Corona Del Mar, California. He found this Targa at the famous Southern California Porsche dealer, Vasek Polak. This was one of two cars displayed in their showroom at the time. He told the salesman that if he included a car bra and sheepskin seat covers, he would buy it. Joe only kept the car for a couple of years before selling it in the fall of 1988 with 15k miles. He sold it to Pete Ruotsi from Alamo, California.
Pete already owned two other 911s. He used this one mostly to play golf on the weekend at Round Hill Country Club near his home in Northern California. The car was always garaged and he never kept the top on. He only used it when the weather was nice enough to golf. He enjoyed this Targa for the next 17 years and added another 55k miles. He serviced it at a local independent shop close to his home. The services were just routine fluid changes, valve adjustments, and brakes. In August of 2001, he replaced the Targa seals. He sold this Targa to the current Northern California owner on May 2nd, 2005 with 69,869 miles.
The current owner also lives in the San Francisco bay area. I’ve known him longer than he’s owned this car as he too is a long-time R Gruppe member. At the time he bought this 911, he was actually looking at a 911SC coupe and this Targa was nearby. He decided to check this one out, even though he didn’t think he wanted a Targa at the time. However, he was very impressed with the condition that he knew this was the one. It was head and shoulders above everything else he had looked at thus far.
This owner is obsessive about how he cares for his Porsches and this Targa was no exception. He enjoys tinkering and did most of the routine services in his garage. Like the previous owner, he kept the Targa top wrapped up in the garage and rarely had it on the car. He would only drive the car if it was a fair-weather day. Also, he kept a log of all the services he performed. For the last 18 years, he’s only added another 35k miles. Initially, he used the car more often and would occasionally drive it to work. However, over the past 10 years, he has averaged less than a thousand miles each year. After recently retiring, he’s finally getting to a couple restoration projects and needs the space. Thus, he asked us to help him find the next caretaker.

This 911 is in exceptional and very original condition. It’s clear that it led a pampered life, always garaged, and regularly serviced. The paint looks great and there are minimal signs of use considering its age and miles. The paint is largely original and verified with a paint meter. The hood and front bumper were repainted over 20 years ago due to rock chips. Visually, you can’t tell. There are some minor chips that have been touched up. The lower front valence has some signs of road rash as well as the fog lights. There is a very shallow dent (hard to see in photos) on the decklid from years of closing. The Targa top is in very good shape as are the seals. It fits nicely with just a slight wrinkling of the leading edge. The vinyl is in great shape with no tears or cracks. The glass is mostly original and wearing the proper factory stampings. The windshield was replaced in the ‘90s with a correct factory glass and has the Sigla stamp. There are no major chips or scratches and just some light typical rash on the windshield. The Fuchs wheels were just refurbished by the guru, Harvey Weidman. They look like new and are wrapped in near full tread Continental tires that were installed 7 years ago. There are no signs of age or cracking. The brakes have about half-life remaining with no lips on the rotors. All the exterior lights work.
The interior is original and equally as nice as the exterior. It showcases the obsessive care provided by this owner. In fact, he had a very specific Rolls Royce leather preservation technique that he performs yearly, which has helped to not only preserve the seats, but also keep them supple. As a result, the leather seats look near new with no major cracks or tears. There’s barely any exit bolster wear either. The rear seats look unused and new. The Targa top headliner has no tears and is just slightly loose. The carpet is also original with no stains or heavy wear marks. Even the factory floormats that were delivered new with the car look fresh. The door panels have minimal signs of use and none of the typical warping of the door pockets. The dash has no cracks or warping either. All the gauges work, including the clock. The electric mirrors, partial power seats, and windows all work. The passenger window is a bit sticky going up and down, but does work. Occasionally, the owner likes to enjoy a cigar in the garage as he works on his cars. Although there are no visible signs of this, I can smell a very slight remnant odor. I have a hyper sensitive nose, but many who have seen the car can’t smell it. The upgraded Sony stereo system was installed over 15 years ago and still works. The A/C system hasn’t been used in years and does not operate, but is complete and still installed. The interior light works as well as the cruise control system.
This 911 comes with two original keys, valet key, wheel lock key, original key card, original owner’s manual with vinyl cover, original stamped maintenance/warranty booklet, factory air-compressor, factory jack, original space saver spare, original “sugar scoop” sealed beam headlights complete, and most service records/history.
