1983 Porsche 911 Additional Info:

Overview

We purchased this 1983 911 SC Targa December 2019. We've enjoyed putting some miles on the car this spring / summer, but now it is time to make space for something else.

The SC Targa has run very strong for us while we've owned it. We replace an oil cooler line and a fuse related to the fuel injection, but that is all the mechanical work we've had done.

No structural rust has been found. The only corrosion seen has been the superficial tray underneath the engine.

No major leaks have been observed. After a couple weeks of sitting, a small spot around the size of a half dollar shows under the center of the engine.

Enhancements to the car include:

  • Upgraded front mount oil cooler to keep temps down
  • Free flowing exhaust - has a nice growl
  • Bott sport shifter. Nice short, notchy throw (https://www.bugat5speed.de/porsche/porsche-schalthebel/31-sportschalthebel-911-mit-915-getriebe).
  • Custom 917 style wood shift knob which provided a great feel.
  • Modern Porsche CDR-220 radio
  • Updated Bosch H4 headlights

The car idles, pulls and shifts like it should. 915 synchros seem good, no grinding. Drives and stops straight. No indication of prior accidents or excessive body damage.

Exterior

The exterior of the car shows very nicely. The Fuchs rims are in above average condition for this price range. The paint could also be described as above average for this price range. There has been some paint correction done on the car, but as far as we know, only for cosmetic reasons.

The targa top looks like it has been redone somewhat recently. It looks very nice.

Interior

Our 83 Targa's interior is very nice. Dash looks great. Steering wheel looks great. The exceptional Sport Seats are worth at least 10% of our asking price alone. The combination of black door panels / seats and linen carpets is a nice two tone effect that is unlike most SC's you see. The interior has been well preserved and shows care.

History

We did not receive any service records with the car. The condition would indicate that it has had some caring owners. We sure have loved having the car around this past year.

The only reason we have the car priced this cheap is because in 2005 at 58,631 miles, the owner replaced the odometer and disclosed this replacement to the DMV in Maryland. The state then issued a Not Actual Miles branded title from 2005 - 2012. The Carfax clearly shows the exact mileage of the odometer replacement as well as the mileage starting over from 0 there. The car comes with a clean California title.

When we received the car it was showing 16,817 miles. This spring we sent the gauge out to a specialist in California to have the odometer set to reflect the actual documented miles for the car. Which currently shows just over 76,100.

Pretty much every Porsche from the 80's has had its odometer replaced, it is just not often it gets reported to the DMV.

Without this blemish in the title history, we believe this could be closer to a 40k example of an 83 SC Targa.
