1984 Porsche 944 -- Additional Info:
Sporty style, stick shift performance, and an awesome handling suspension, the 1984 Porsche 944 really understands how to deliver what we want in a vintage Porsche. And it does it all for quite a nice price.
The 944 has one of the slipperiest designs of the time. Flush headlights, flared fenders, and a sleek profile were all part of the look from the day this left the German factory. The Guards Red paint was an upgrade later in life. This bold color is a good choice, because it also makes for a nice contrast to the dark elements on the car. The bumpers, window trim, well-integrated spoiler, and more are all finished in black. So are the iconic Fuchs alloys. Plus, there's an upgraded black pinstripe that encircles the whole car, including passing over the folding headlights. The result is almost like a subtle two-tone.
Inside, there is more of that attractive black in the well-done interior. The seats are finished in a supple leather, and the front buckets are high-back units that look straight from the 911 model. The three-spoke sports steering wheel is another legendary piece borrowed from the bigger brother. And you feel more of this driver's attitude in everything from the large dayglow gauges to the position of the stick shift. This one goes beyond just a sporty heritage, and it delivers nice comfort upgrades, like the AM/FM/cassette stereo and cold-blowing R134a air conditioning. Plus, this has the hallmark sunroof that can be power operated to be a nice vent spoiler, or you can remove the panel to give this coupe an impressive full open roof.
The 2.5-liter motor for the 944 was a pure Porsche engine. Fuel-injection, overhead camshaft, and a balance shaft made for a motor that has a great low-end response off the line and was made to be smooth all-around. Plus, Porsche engineered the best handling into this one with a motor mounded for a lower center of gravity, and the five-speed transaxle in the rear for optimal weight distribution. Add in four-wheel disc brakes, power steering, and a fully independent suspension, and this classic Porsche has terrific moves.
