217914 was produced on April 9th 1964, and was purchased by its first owner on June 22ndlater that year. It then received a factory customer service booklet #83283. This was part of the process of tracking work on the car at the factory after the car was purchased.
On the Porsche Kardex an electric sunroof is listed as an installed option on 217914. From the way the sunroof is constructed it can be deduced that the sunroof was installed sometime after the bodywork stage of production, and before delivery. A car with a sunroof installed during production has a small drain hole behind the rear quarter window. This car has the drain behind the C-pillar, and exits into the rear fender well. That drain location is typical of a sunroof installation done by the factory after production. If a customer decided that they wanted a sunroof after production, or if the car had been ordered with one and had been mistakenly built without one Porsche would simply transport the finished car to Golde in Stuttgart for the installation, and then Porsche would repaint the top. The sunroof in this car is in every way a factory sunroof.
217914 was restored in 2010 by the renown 356 experts, Willhoit Restorations. At Willhoit they manage to combine both show winning attention to detail with extreme attention to function and performance. The work on 217914 is a perfect example of this philosophy. The car was stripped down to its bare metal tub and built up as a show winning, canyon carver. Improvements include the building of a 2002cc, 126hp twin spark engine with a custom exhaust and full flow oil system; Upgraded suspension with a 17.5mm front sway bar, Stiffer torsion springs, decambered front spindles, and Bilstein shocks; Full 12 volt conversion; Dual circuit brake kit; Breakerless CDI ignition, Short shift kit; and an electric fuel pump.
A three-owner car, for the first 46 years of its life 217914 resided in the car friendly environment of Southern California. The most recent owner lives in NC, and had the car there for less than two years driving it occasionally.
From the period Les Leston steering wheel to the 15" wheels with 205/55/15 Dunlop Direzza tires this car is a performance machine with one foot firmly planted in its 60's roots, and the other stomping on the latest performance advances. A great opportunity to drive a fully sorted Porsche 356 Outlaw.
