1958 Porsche 356 Additional Info:
Greetings Fellow Ebay-er's!What we have for auction today is a friend's 1958 Porsche 356A Reutter-bodied, original cabriolet. In case you are new to identifying Porsche cars, here is a little bit of info on the "A" Normal cars:
60 bhp, 1,582 cc horizontally-opposed OHV four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, torsion bar independent front suspension, torsion bar swing axle independent rear suspension, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 82.7 in.
This car, VIN 150432 was originally purchased from Catron Motors in Pomona, California in 1958 by the caretaker's father, and has lived its entire life in California. The engine number is 69645 which matches the Certificate of Authenticity. The transmission is 19646 which also matches the Certificate of Authenticity. The car's original bumpers have been lost to Time, but the original wheelswith a set of tires are included with the sale. This car was orderedwith a factory hardtop and tonneau, and nocabriolet soft-top.
The engine was rebuilt many years ago, has a few oil leaks and runs very strong; probably a big bore kit and camwere installed, along with a Bursch exhaust. The owner added an "interesting" capacitivedischarge ignition system; it isn't original but runs perfect and kind of grows on you. The transmission shifts smoothly in all gears but the second gear synchro is starting to show signs of a little wear, and the clutch bites correctly with no slippage. On the road, the car handles beautifully with current day tires and Mangle wheels, and is a joy to drive.
And as you can see by the dash plaques, this car was in events at the dawn of Sports Car racing in the United States. Great historical and personal history. The car was extensively raced in gymkhanas, time trials, rallies and slalom events in the California and Nevada; most of the trophieshas been lost but several still exist.
The interior was redone by an outfit in Arizona in the 2000's and is in fine shape despite the material used. It was also resprayed theoriginal black. The Optima battery is about three years old and works perfectly. There is a 3mm-sized rust hole in the battery area because of the older lead-acid batteries. No other rust on the car.
The side glass pieces are original and a newer windshield is fitted. The rear license plate light was damaged but comes with the car. The mileage on the odometer is lacking the sixth digit so assume the car has 129,466 miles, and counting.
Number 432 is stamped on the reardeckled, indicating that panel is original to the car.
So there you have it; a great car for driving or investing. Just to recap:
1. Early Porsche2. Engine numbers matching COA3. Transmission numbers matching COA4. Panels number matching VIN5. Very original6. Cabriolet open car7. Factory hardtop8. Single family-owned9. Purchased in California10. California title included11. Raced in many events in the Southwest
If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email, and I'll do my best to answer as soon as possible. The car is located in Grass Valley, California.
