Spring is coming – do you have something REALLY fun to cruise in this summer? If not, e can certainly help with this gorgeous, ow-mileage 1973 Pontiac Bonneville 4-door, hich is being offered for your enjoyment. It will make an excellent addition to your collection.
We’ve had our fun with the Bonneville, nd now it’s time to pass her on to someone else for their enjoyment.
This old beauty attracts attention everywhere it gets driven. The factory original Florentine Red paint shines up well and the original interior has only one small blemish on the front seat. The matching 400 CID engine purrs and has plenty of power to motivate the Bonneville down the road. It starts, tops and drives like new. It’s a perfect family cruiser.
And, est of all, his Bonneville has VERY, ERY LOW miles. That’s right, fter 43 years, he has been driven very minimally, u>racking up only 28,600 ACTUAL miles! It’s quite possibly the lowest mileage 1973 Pontiac Bonneville left out there that isn’t in a museum.
And, hile this Bonneville would not be considered ‘loaded with options,’ it does have the options that matter: power steering, ower brakes and air conditioning. (Note that it DOES need a new A/C compressor due to a previous owner’s failed attempt at a R134a conversion which burnt up the compressor. We just drove it around in the evenings and rolled down all the windows.)
The factory red interior is minty, ith no damage to the carpet, oor panels, eadliner, eadrests, ear seat or dash. All are just like-new - it even smells like a new car. There is only one small (1.5” long) split on the bottom of the front seat upholstery – which would be an easy fix for an upholstery shop. The top of the front seat is still mint. And, s is common after forty years, he foam cushion in the front seat bottom should be replaced at the same time. It’s lost its’ ‘spring’ and sags a little where the driver sits.
All glass is original, lear and clean with no visible damage. Windows roll up and down correctly and smoothly.
The factory AM/FM radio is in need of repair or tuner cleaning – fairly common on these older analog boxes. It works intermittently.
The original 400 cubic inch engine starts right up and runs well. Runs cool and has plenty of power, ven with the factory 2-barrel carb. Transmission works well, hifts smoothly and has no issues. Brakes are good and work exactly the way factory power brakes should work – which is VERY well!
And there is absolutely ZERO RUST!! That’s right, he frame, uspension, ndercarriage and body panels have no rot whatsoever. None. There is only very minimal surface rust on the frame. This lack of rust is probably because the original purchaser paid to have the car ‘rust-proofed’ (Ziebarted?) when he bought it. You can see the little plastic plugs where they sprayed the rust-proofing into the body panels in the pics – a very popular dealer-option at the time. You can also see some of the rust-proofing under the hood on the frame and radiator support. It was suggested that we clean this coating off where it is visible to show the great condition of the frame and suspension, ut we decided to leave it as it is for the new owner to decide if it should be removed or maintained.
Unfortunately, he Bonneville’s factory original Florentine Red paint is showing its’ age. The original owner stored it under a carport and it saw the winter weather. And then one of the previous owners parked her under a tree allowing zombie-birds to dive-bomb the paint, o there are numerous areas that have been burnt by their acidic droppings. We had it color-sanded and buffed, ut there is only so much you can do after birds attack. The vertical surfaces on the sides shine up very nicely, lthough there is one area of damage between the doors on the passenger’s side that has been touched up poorly. We’ve shown this in the pics. Even so, he paint still buffs up well, ith a great shine. A superb 20-footer.
The roof-rail weatherstrips are also just beginning to show their age – not horrible yet but not perfect. They should be replaced in the future.
The Firestone tires have excellent (at least 80%) tread and roll down the road smoothly. However, hey are about seven years old, o I wouldn’t plan any ‘high-speed’ driving until they are replaced. For around town, would just keep driving them until you need to replace them.
We’ve done the following during our ownership:
Replaced:
All four shock absorbers (gas shocks on front, ir shocks on rear = no more sag)
Radiator hoses and heater hoses
All vacuum hoses
Fan clutch (heavy duty Hayden)
Fan belts
Spark plugs, lug wires, oints, ondenser, ap and rotor
Fuel pump
Air filter
Turn signal bulbs, ront and rear – all work correctly
We rebuilt the original carb – three times (‘deathanol’ is hard on accelerator pumps) and the radiator was cleaned to ensure that the Bonneville wouldn’t overheat. And I think I might have put on new front disc pads – I’ll have to check.
So all she really needs right now is an air conditioning compressor (it’s bad per the ‘R134a Freon mishap’), receiver drier, system flush and a recharge with R12. Then you’re ready to cruise – and stay COOL - this summer! Or just drive at night like we did!
