This is a no reserve auction for a rare 1966 Pontiac GTO 2 door coupe
This is a true barn find, which was found in a small town called Glorieta, New Mexico. This is a 2 owner car and is an amazing survivor with clean New Mexico title from 1984.
The VIN is 242076K144263 which breaks down to 1 of 10363 Pontiac GTO Coupe's made in 1966. The paint is Y, which means it was a originally Candlelight Cream, with a trim code of 224 for a white Parchment interior.
I have not done anything to the car and is basically how I found the car on a back road in Glorieta. When I found the car it was up on railroad ties to keep it off the ground. I have not even washed this car, the only thing I did was replace a bent hood hinge so the hood would open up. I didn’t even have to buy the new hinge; it was located in the trunk.
Exterior:
When looking at the car, one can see spots where the original Candlelight cream is coming through the paint. The body is nearly rust free and is very very straight. The only rust on the outside of the car is the half dollar cancer spot on 3 of the 4 quarter panels. The rear driver’s quarter panel does not show any signs of rust.
The doors and fenders are solid and very straight. The hood is in great shape with no dents. The roof, trunk lid and fins are solid, but have a little surface rust. There does not appear to be any rust around any of the windows. The front bumper is a little tweaked since there is a dent on the nose. Overall the body is as good as one could ever want from a barn find. It is very straight and nearly rust free, with 3 little spots on the whole car.
As far as I can tell it is all original sheet metal. The chrome trim is really good. The front bumper is not original. The side mirrors and 1 chrome rocker is missing from the passenger side. I wish I could describe better how good, straight and complete the body is.
Interior:
The original white interior is still in the car, and looks pretty good but very stained. The door panels and all trim are still on the car. The front driver’s seat has a tear, and the back seats are torn at the top. The head liner is falling down. The console for the automatic transmission is installed and complete. The dash and glove box are in really good shape. All the gauges are there light up when connected to power. Thedashpad is cracked and the original radio is no longer in the car.
The floors are very solid. I did not find any rust in the floor pans. The frame looks solid and has a little surface rust.
Engine:
The engine is not the original motor but was replaced under warranty back in late 1967 or 1968. The original engine would have been a 389. However I was told the engine needed to be replaced and was replaced in late 1967/ 68 while under warranty and done by the dealership. It currently has a 1968 Pontiac GTO 400 with the casting number 9790071 and WT code. The engine turns over by hand, but I have not tried to start it. It looks to be the original 2 speed automatic transmission.
The engine is very complete, it has all the brackets for the A/C, the wire looms, and original chrome valve covers. The intake was replaced in 1984 from the 4 barrel to a 2 barrel with the carb. I do not have the original intake or carb. The radiator and A/C is taken off and is located in the truck. The drive shaft is also not installed, but is there with the car. The car does not run, but was told it ran when parked. The odometer shows 16,561 miles, and has turned over since the 1984 title say 84,726 miles.
Trunk:
The trunk lock has been drilled out, and was poorly done, damaging some of the sheet metal. The trunk pan is pretty good, but has some rust spots going through. The trunk is filled with parts, it has the original radiator, air conditioner, rear window trim, and some other various parts that go with the car.
Overall this is a rare 66 GTO. It is a perfect candidate for restoration. I can not describe how straight the body is and how rust free the car is after sitting for so long.
Has a clean New Mexico title.
