1977 Pontiac Trans Am â Factory Black-on-Black, 4-Speed, 400ci â True 2-Owner Project
This 1977 Pontiac Trans Am is a rare opportunity to revive a factory black-on-black, 4-speed WS4 car with incredibly strong bones and outstanding originality. With just two owners since new and showing 97k original miles, this Trans Am has lived a garage-kept life and still retains its original quarters, solid frame rails, and authentic T/A character throughout. It's a fantastic foundation for a restoration or resto-mod, with the big-block Pontiac 400, a manual transmission, posi traction, power disc brakes, and the iconic shaker hood all present and accounted for. Projects with this level of provenance and structural integrity are getting harder to find by the year.

Exterior
From the factory, this Trans Am left Norwood in the most desirable color combination Pontiac offered in 1977: Starlight Black exterior with a Black Deluxe interior. Even before the Bandit fame made black T/As legendary, the 19/19 cars were specialâÂÂtoday, they're blue-chip collectibles. The body on this car is solid, honest, and straight, retaining its original GM quarters, a huge plus for collectors prioritizing authenticity. The frame rails, floors, and structural points show as clean and strong, making this an excellent candidate for either a cosmetic refresh or full high-level restoration.
One unique feature is the set of custom-fabricated metal wheel opening flares, professionally integrated into the body. They give the car a more muscular, slightly widened stance without compromising the original T/A lines. The shaker hood is intact.
Interior
This Trans Am came from the factory with a black deluxe interior (code 19B), and it still retains its original bucket seats, console, and interior panels. The cabin is currently mid-installation, with new carpeting installed but the seats and console not yet bolted back in place. All original components are present, making reassembly straightforward for the next owner. The dash, gauges, and interior trim pieces are complete, and being a 4-speed car, the original shifter, pedal box, and related hardware remain intact. With a little attention, the interior can be brought back to a very presentable driver standard or restored to concours level.
Underhood & Body
Under the hood sits the correct Pontiac 400ci V8 (WA Code) paired with a 4-speed manual transmission and posi traction rear end, just as the car was optioned when new. The engine recently received a refurbished OEM carburetor, brand-new fuel tank, and new sending unit. It will start and it previously moved in and out of gear under its own power, but the starter has since failed, and the engine currently runs rough. Based on symptoms and age, we recommend planning for a complete overhaul or considering a drop-in crate engine, depending on your intended build direction.
Importantly, the frame, floors, subframe mounts, and underbody structure show solid metal with no major rust issues. The car is not a patched-together project; it has the quality bones collectors look for.
Power disc brakes, shaker assembly, accessory brackets, and ignition components are all present, giving the next owner a strong starting point with minimal parts-chasing required.
Driving Impressions
While the car last moved under its own power before the starter failed, it currently does not run well enough for road use. The drivetrain engages, and the 4-speed shifts through gears, but the engine condition warrants attention. Once rebuiltâÂÂor replaced with a fresh crate motorâÂÂthis will be a highly rewarding, fun, and valuable Trans Am to drive. The mechanical foundation is all here, including the correct 4-speed setup, clutch linkage, driveshaft, and posi rear.
Conclusion
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a true 1977 Trans Am WS4, factory black-on-black, 400ci, 4-speed, with only two owners and 97k original miles. Project examples with original quarters, a solid frame, and a clean title aren't surfacing like they used toâÂÂespecially not in the most desirable color and drivetrain combination Pontiac offered.
If you're looking for a restoration candidate, a Bandit-tribute build, or simply a solid, honest Trans Am to bring back to life, this car checks all the boxes. With its rare spec, clean bones, and straightforward mechanical needs, it's the perfect foundation for its next chapter.
