The inaugural testing of the Pontiac Firebird XP-21 marked the introduction of gas turbine propulsion in automobiles within the United States. This groundbreaking design features a single-seat cockpit under a canopy with a distinctive bubble top, a fuselage crafted from fiberglass in a sleek bullet shape, compact wings, and a vertical tail fin. From the initial winged designs and concepts, to the finalized product of the 1968 Pontiac Firebird, there exists a dedicated following that is distinct from those who favor Mopar, Mustangs, or Camaros. This fan base remains faithful to the Pontiac brand and the Firebird model. The car has been enhanced with various new components and improvements, exceeding the original standards and serving as an impressive representation of the 1968 Firebird. The vehicle features a chrome grille surround and bumper that wraps around, paired with dual headlights, giving it a polished and well-maintained appearance. The vehicle features a Ram air hood equipped with dual scoops, a red 400 emblem situated on the sides, and a tachometer mounted on the hood. The additional badges on the vehicle are of high quality, and the steel panels are perfectly aligned and maintain consistent gaps. The entire exterior is meticulously coated in a flawlessly applied and polished Torch Red finish. The newly installed glass is framed by glistening trim and complemented by a sleek factory black vinyl top, presenting a striking appearance. 14-inch Rally 2 wheels adorn each corner of the vehicle, with a flawless stainless steel rocker trim piece running between them. The redesigned interior features black vinyl high-back bucket seats in the front and a rear bench with faux stitched horizontal pleating centers and sleek bolsters. The door panels echo the seat design with smooth black vinyl. A wood-grained appliqué center console runs between the seats, housing a Hurst shifter that controls a close-ratio Muncie transmission. The angled dashboard is immaculate, showcasing new factory gauges, bezels, and switches. A wood steering wheel with a convenient tilt column adds to the sophistication of the interior. The headliner and black carpet are both flawless in appearance. Commencing with the refurbishment of the approximately 1969 vintage 400 cubic inch 0.30 over engine, the original camshaft has been preserved while the original 4-barrel Quadrajet carburetor remains in place. Situated behind the 400 cubic inches is a Muncie M21 close ratio 4-speed transmission equipped with a Hurst shifter and linkage. Accompanied by a 10-bolt posi unit rear containing new bearings and 3.55 gears, the initially mild-mannered pony car with its distinctive beak-like front end transforms into a more aggressive and powerful vehicle. Encased in an eye-catching steel blue engine block and adorned with chrome accessories, including an air cleaner and valve covers, the car takes on the appearance of a finely-crafted piece of mechanical artwork. Completely refurbished with updated components beneath, including a new driveshaft yoke and universal joints, as well as new control arms, steering linkage, and a 1-1/4 inch sway bar upgrade. The vehicle also features new stock leaf springs with original shocks, and an upgraded braking system that includes power front disc brakes. A gleaming stainless steel exhaust system runs along the back of the vehicle, adding a touch of luxury to an already immaculate setting. A minor tear is observed on the front section of the passenger's side rear unibody rail. Although it does not appear to compromise the structural soundness, it is advisable to rectify it for visual appeal. On rare occasions, I have the opportunity to test drive a meticulously maintained automobile from 1968, and this experience exceeded my expectations. The vehicle started smoothly with a simple turn of the key, emitted an impressive sound, and operated flawlessly. It exhibited pleasing power, boasted a luxurious interior, and offered a smooth ride with exceptional handling. For enthusiasts of early Firebird models, it is highly recommended to carefully inspect this meticulously restored early specimen, complete with numerous enhancements and new authentic components. Featuring a flawless paint finish, enhanced engine aesthetics, and a stylish interior, one can truly appreciate the hard work and dedication put into this vehicle. It is undoubtedly a high-quality investment-worthy classic car, showcasing a deep admiration for the Firebird brand through its completion.Guaranteed to turn your face in to a smile when you are behind the wheel of this endearing automobile classic.Do Not Miss your chance to own The Most Iconic Automobile in American History! We can have this car shipped right to your front door for $1 per loaded mile (one way). We'll give you temporary license plate after you purchase this vehicle.
