Here is a great example of the ultimate automotive icon of the mid-70’s: the Pontiac Trans Am. This 1976 model is a genuine black 455 cubic inch 4-speed example. It is a fantastic looking car that is more fun to drive than just about anything from the era. And while any Trans Am is a collectible, 1976 was the final year for both the round headlight Firebird design and Pontiac’s big 455 engine, adding to the desirability of this one.
Make no mistake, this is a real Trans Am as designated by the first “W” in the VIN along with the “WS4” on the Norwood cowl tag. It shows 46k miles and is a very solid car throughout. The floors and frame pieces all appear original and in great shape, free of any rust problems or patchwork. The car has seen a repaint in its original Code 19 Starlight Black. Of course, the decals were redone as well (it’s hard to imagine this car without them). The original wheels were replaced with beautiful 17” gold snowflakes wearing Nitto 275/40ZR17 tires from 2018. Is there any better look for a Trans Am?
The second “W” in the VIN designates the optional WX-code 455 ci engine. This was the final year for Pontiac’s largest-ever factory displacement as fuel standards and emissions requirements drove these big motors into extinction. This one has been replaced with an identical WX block and 6H cylinder heads from 1976. It also has a few performance modifications including an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and headers feeding Magnaflow mufflers. The engine is backed by the original Borg Warner Super T10 4-speed transmission that really adds to the driving experience. Other features include power steering and power front disc brakes.
The interior appears to be the original code 71N Firethorn Red package. It offers a great contrast to the black exterior and is a somewhat rare combination. Note this one is a deluxe package with the special seat covers, door panels, rear ash trays, and passenger grab handle. Everything appears stock (with the exception of the floor mats) and is in remarkable condition for a car nearing 50 years of age. The lights, horn, wipers, heater/defroster, parking brake, all work properly. So does the factory AM/FM radio.
There aren’t many cars with the aura of a Trans Am, and this one really nails it. With the desirable body style, black paint, golden decals, and shaker hood scoop with 455 HO callouts, it really looks the part. But this one is more than just good looks. It is also a car you can really enjoy driving as you run through the gears. Recent sales show these cars are in high demand; check this one out before prices get any higher.
