Formerly a part of the Gast Classic Motorcars Museum in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, this unrestored Trans Am retains its original drivetrain, including the 400/335 HP Ram Air III V-8 engine, 4-speed manual transmission, rare original black Deluxe interior with console-delete, Rally gauge pack, 160 MPH speedometer, pushbutton AM radio, wood steering wheel, Rally II wheels and even the original Goodyear Polyglas F70-14 tires. As the top performance option for the 1969 Firebird, the Trans Am made its debut in March 1969. Available in one exterior color combination—Cameo White with blue stripes, the American racing colors—the Trans Am featured an exclusive dual-scooped steel hood, fiberglass side extractors and a fiberglass rear spoiler. The suspension was also upgraded with a 1-inch front sway bar and the variable-ratio power-steering box from the Firebird 400. The powertrain availability was limited to the two Ram Air 400 CI V-8s: the Ram Air III, rated at 335 HP, and the top-option barely streetable Ram Air IV, rated at a very conservative 345 HP. Transmission choices included a standard 3-speed manual, a 4-speed manual or a 3-speed Turbo 400 automatic. Pontiac paid the Sports Car Club of America licensing fees in the amount of $5 per car for the use of the Trans Am name, an arrangement that lasted through the end of production in 2002. Ironically, the Firebird Trans Am's raced for the 1969 SCCA season were forced to use Chevy's 302 CI V-8, as the 303 Pontiac engine was never released for regular production. With a production run of just 697 1969 Trans Am's built, including eight convertibles, finding an original, unrestored example like this one would prove to be an exceptional challenge. An unrestored 1969 Trans Am, this particular example has just 30,920 original miles from new and is one of just four known to exist in this configuration.
