1972 Pontiac LeMans Convertible
While the Pontiac GTO gets all the accolades and high selling prices to go along with the hoopla, truth be told, its sibling, the Le Mans is basically the same car. The LeMans is a great alternative to spending tens of thousands on a GTO, as both cars share the same sheetmetal, interior components and most mechanical parts. The 1968 to 1972 LeMans models are among the best-looking Pontiacs ever manufactured and are quite plentiful, with nearly 673,000 built. Finding parts is easy due to a huge supply of parts cars and a strong aftermarket.
For consignment the more affordable LeMans Sport from 1972. This particular car is numbers matching, has correct interior and exterior colors as well as the top. Our consigner purchased this car from the original owner who was a GM engineer, and states that every event it has been entered into it has won a first-place trophy.
Exterior
Badged with the AACA senior car emblem, we see nothing but pure perfection on the exterior of this car. Bathed in miles deep Cardinal Red which covers laser straight steel panels with awesomely minded gaps everything about this car is straight and true. A GT decal spear has been added at the midline, which coincidentally aligns with the bumpers and flirts with the tops of the wheel wells. The bumpers and all chrome are the beneficiary of a re-plating and shines like a crazy diamond. Above the front bumper is a split grille which has the Pontiac beak and that is flanked by dual headlights with shiny bezels. To the rear and we see inset taillights in the back bumper, more straight steel for the rear quarters and trunk lid. The white pristine canvas convertible top is power activated, moves up and down smoothly, and has a nice black interior headliner. The rear glass window is clear, and the front glass has recently been replaced. Correct 14 x 7 inch honeycombed wheels are all around and these are wrapped by BF Goodrich raised letter radial T/A's.
Interior
Moving to the interior which is covered in white vinyl from the door panels to the seats, which are buckets with adjustable headrests in front and a long and clean bench in the rear. These nicely preserved seats are floating in a sea of black unfaded carpet and have white rubber Pontiac floor mats protecting the front. The dash is all original and presents in black with some wood appliqu for the gauge cluster. Fronting this beautiful dash is a correct formula steering wheel which has been recently added. The original GM Delco radio is mounted within a horizontal machined spun aluminum pattern trim strip, and actually works. Some of the wood appliqu is coming loose and is a little wavy at the seams but is a very easy fix.
Drivetrain
All numbers matching under the hood and below, we see a very clean 350ci V8 topped by a correct Rochester 2-Jet 2-barrel carburetor. On back is a numbers matching TH350 3-speed automatic transmission. Also, the rear axle with a WB stamping code is a 10 bolt 2.56 gear setup. Blue paint covers the block and valve covers and all non-corroded parts as well as shiny supple rubber hoses and belts can be seen.
Undercarriage
No even a hint of rust to be seen all black shiny steel that is structurally sound and not even spattered with road dirt. A stock exhaust snakes its way rearward, passing independent coil springs up front, and 4 link with coil springs on the rear. Power disc brakes are on all 4 corners
Drive-Ability
A beautiful driver that started right up and handled our test track, passing with flying colors. Good acceleration, nice cruising, and great brakes and we are all safe here.
A truly wonderful example of the LeMans Sport, which has had only 2 very caring owners, and it shows. A multiple first place winner, AACA senior car, and a stunner to view in person. You'll need to do that by showing up to the Classic Auto Mall, but in the meantime take a gander of the pictures and see if you can find anything wrong.
