Now here's a truly rare find. This 1968 Pontiac Firebird 400 Convertible represents the model at its open air best. Lightly traveled - it's only been driven about 72,000 miles during its more than a half century of life - it still features an entirely original drivetrain and comes complete with both its factory build sheet and PHS documentation to attest to its originality, as well as maintenance records to provide proof that it's been diligently cared for. ... That the exterior on this '68 is looking its best comes as no accident. The Meridian Turquoise paint it wears was an original offering on the Firebird's color chart the year it debuted and it's in great form here, with lots of depth and a very smooth texture - having recently undergone a multi stage detail, it's really sharp. The foundation underneath the paint is very solid as well - the body lines on this Pontiac look very precise and the gaps surrounding the doors, hood and deck lid are nice and uniform. Judging from their fresh appearance, both the front and rear bumpers were likely replaced not long ago and the remaining brightwork is in very solid condition as well - the trim along the rocker panels looks especially strong. For those occasions that call for shelter while on the road, the power black cloth convertible top raises into place without issue and its clear glass rear window means you won't have to worry about the fading due to UV exposure that often plagues the plastic versions. The parchment white interior complements the exterior nicely and provides a great vantage point from which to navigate this open-air classic. Everything inside remains in good condition - the bucket seats up front and the bench seat in back retain their original shape and show no obvious tears or wear spots and the contrasting black carpeting underneath them appears to have been fairly recently installed. Up front, the dash area sports its proper deep black color and you'll find an assortment of clear factory gauges in the instrument cluster, as well as a straight, uncracked dash pad running across the top. A couple of well-chosen aftermarket add-ons make this Firebird an even more comfortable ride - the Old Air climate control is a welcome feature on a vintage convertible like this and there's a retro-looking Custom Autosound AM/FM stereo with iPod connectivity on board to handle your audio needs. The driving experience this classic offers is very strong - it tracks straight on the road and has a smooth ride. The 400 cubic inch V8 beneath the hood is not only original, but it starts right up and, armed with a 4-barrel Quadrajet under its properly badged chrome air cleaner and a pair of chrome valve covers at its sides, runs great. Just behind it is an also-original 3 speed automatic TH400 transmission that shifts very precisely. A number of items inside the compartment have been replaced for added reliability - including the hoses and belts - and the master cylinder and power brake booster are likely recent replacements as well. The brakes on this Firebird are particularly strong and feature discs up front. With the factory style dual exhaust still in place, this classic has a nice, subtle sound as it cruises on its set of 14" stock wheels wrapped with Michelin tires. You'll rarely come across a first generation Firebird sporting anywhere near its strong condition and with it retaining its original engine and transmission, along with the open air configuration it's a real standout.
