When you want to be rarer, faster, and all-around cooler than any Bandit T/A out there, it's time to get familiar with the legend of the 1978 Pontiac Firebird Macho Trans Am. And as you dig into the history, don't forget to check out the stick shift, T-tops, and V8 power - everything that makes a T/A instantly desirable. If you're not familiar with the Macho cars, that's ok, because it was a rare treat only enjoyed by...a few. Mecham Pontiac of Phoenix teamed up with tuner DKM to create a short-lived Yenko-level program for Pontiacs. In fact, they were special enough that their sequential production number was painted on the car (this is #171 of 203.) And the '78 Trans Am is absolutely worthy of special edition attention. The wide ground effects in front of the wheel wells, integrated rear spoiler, and shaker hood all gives this a real presence on the streets. You can see it all today so well because this on was given a recent professional respray. And it takes a small fortune just to get the paint right on these Macho cars. The dark red that starts on the hood bird sets off a color that runs up the hood, around the doors, and ends behind the T-tops. It's fully outlined in a golden pinstripe, and that includes where the red is utilized on the rear window, rocker panels, and spoiler. Oh yes, this is a highly detailed machine. Inside the red fully takes over. And the fresh seats and carpeting really help make this T/A look like it's out for blood. It's the exact aggressive look you want for a performance machine like this. You'll grab the iconic three-spoke sports steering wheel with correct and rare DKM center cap. Beyond that is the machine-turned aluminum dash panel with large speedo and tach/clock combo. And your right hand is going to love the upgrade to a Hurst shifter. But more than just aggressive, you have all the right feature you want in an upper-class classic, like power windows, power locks, and a tilt wheel. Plus, the air conditioning is blowing cold, so you can enjoy this with the T-tops off long into the summer season. The Macho T/A lived up to its name and appearance by what's under the hood. This is the original 400 cubic-inch V8, and it has the right DKM modifications such as the Hooker headers and how they opened up the shaker hood for better breathing. Plus, this one has been given some terrific additions like an Edelbrock aluminum intake and a Pypes X-pipe dual exhaust. And our favorite upgrade is the four-speed manual transmission. After all, it allows you to get the most out of this Macho T/A. Plus, this is a tight-handling WS6 car that includes a limited slip rear end and sway bars front & rear. It goes great with the power steering and front disc brakes. Plus, this has been upgraded to Year One 18-inch Snowflake alloys. While these keep the period-correct spirit, they also allow for grippy modern rubber, like these Nitto NT555 Extreme ZR tires. The sale comes complete with a ton of paperwork, including the factory buildsheet, owner's manual, and a binder full of history. So if you're ready for a powerful and exceptionally rare T-top classic, don't let this opportunity slip away. Call today!!!
