Nearly every car enthusiast has likely passed by a good-looking, small and relatively lightweight car and thought to themselves, "I wonder what that would be like with a V8 under the hood." After all, "small car + big power" has been has been a compelling automotive equation over the years. Starting with a Fiero as a foundation, the curiosity level goes up another notch due to its unique mid-engine, rear wheel drive design. This 1988 Pontiac Fiero GT illustrates how... the skillful execution of that idea results in a powerful sports car that also features outstanding weight distribution. Some very inspired modifications make this Fiero truly unique without obscuring its identity in the process. Featuring a white exterior that's accented by a pair of broad racing stripes running the length of the car, the fiberglass hood is scooped for a more aggressive looks which really works. The rest of the body lines are kept largely intact, and that's a good thing... The Fiero's looks captured the imagination of the American public to produce strong sales during the five-year production window it was offered. Both the well-contoured scoops added to its flanks just behind the doors and a pair of extra wide exhaust tips peering out from the rear valance enhance its modified but refined appearance. It also comes with it's original spoiler as well as an aftermarket aluminum one. Climb inside and you'll see a very nice brown and black leather interior that shows a lot of finish. The bucket seats look great - while they retain their basic original configuration, their two-tone color and custom embroidery transform their look into something decidedly special. They straddle a very well-preserved center console that received the same great custom treatment and also offers a sizable storage compartment. Like the seating, the dash area features a striking upgrade of the original design, with outstanding carbon fiber accents on the steering wheel, instrument panel and center console. This is a well-equipped sports car, with air conditioning that blows nice and cold, power windows and door locks and a very nice Pioneer AM/FM/CD system sitting securely in the dash. The combination of mid-engine configuration and rear wheel drive gave the Fiero its great weight distribution and freedom from dreaded torque steer. The original 2.8 liter V6 has been replaced with a 4.6 liter, 32 valve fuel-injected Northstar V8 (with an estimated 15k miles on it), the same engine used in Cadillacs and other premium GM drivetrains for nearly 20 years. It's a powerful engine, producing in the vicinity of 300 horsepower and, on a car such as this, weighing well under 3000 lbs, it provides all the acceleration prowess you could want. There's more than just straight-ahead speed to be enjoyed here, however. This Fiero is actually equipped to provide all the elements of an exhilarating driving experience: there are power disc brakes featured at all four corners and a very well regarded multi-link suspension in back. This one of a kind mid-engine sports car sits nice and low to the ground on a set of 17" Konig wheels that are wrapped with Sentury All-Weather tires.
