I bought this car for my 64 year old father to thank him for letting me drive the one he owned back when I was a kid in high school. I ran his car into the ground and as I've gotten older the guilt has just gotten worse! This was not a spur of the moment purchase for me. I literally traveled to inspect over 100 cars before I found this one.
We have shared a lot of cars over the years, never one as nice as this. After using a little deductive reasoning he realized how much I must have spent on the car, what the car was worth and has has parked it in his garage and refuses to drive it. He is afraid of damaging it or hampering it's future value by adding miles to the odometer. I do visit and take it out once a month for short drives around his neighborhood. In total we have put only 146 miles on it.
This car came out of a collection and the man who owned it was meticulous. He actually delivered it to my fathers house for me in his enclosed trailer rather than letting me drive it the several hundred miles home. He would be disappointed to see this car collecting dust in my fathers garage. In fact the only thing this car truly needs is a good detailing and as you can see from the photographs, the dust is accumulating. I would take the time to do it, but not in the middle of the winter in Maryland!
I had the car towed to my mechanic who went through it from the bottom to the top before I attempted to drive it. Knowing it was a trailer queen for so long I wanted to be certain it was in proper running order. All of the fluids were clean! It runs, drives, shifts and stops as it should. I wasn't surprised to see just how well maintained the car was, again meticulous. I've added a video of the car driving below.
I'll let the photographs speak to the cosmetic condition of this car, but I bring your attention to the most important photographs: I have used a simple kids magnet to demonstrate that the car is not full of rust or Bondo. This is not a super high powered magnet, just something any parent should recognize. It has all of it's original sheet metal, including floor and trunk pans.
One interesting thing about this particular car is the NASCAR emblems found on both the front fenders. While it is known how many Pace Car's Pontiac sold in 1980, the NASCAR option was a regional option offered at select dealers. I have included a copy of the dealer option form below. This car was sold new in North Carolina and that would make sense, that is NASCAR country. You can buy reproductions of every emblem EXCEPT the NASCAR emblems found on the front fenders. How many are out there in this condition with that option? Your guess is as good as mine. So this car came equipped new with every available option except the rear window defroster and heavy duty battery, two things a person from North Carolina wouldn't need.
Set aside for a moment that title is branded “A” for actual mileage. Forget about the fact that PHS has documented this rare bird. And even give no credit to how rare it may be to have one of the cars that have the dealer optioned NASCAR emblems... This is not a frame off restored car. There is no evidence of rot, rust, Bondo, sheet metal replacement or it having ever been in an accident. The windows are not scratched up from being wound up or down a million times. The pedals show minimal signs of wear. The interior shows little wear and I see no evidence of it having been reupholstered. The rubbers are not dry rotted. The engine bay is nothing short of award winning. The T-tops are in good shape, showing evidence of minimal wear/tear. You can no longer purchase reproductions of the NASCAR emblems found on the front fenders. The prior owner did perform a cosmetic freshening up of the car, to what extent I do not know and have no way of knowing what parts were replaced or refurbished. He told me that it was a very solid car when he began but he wanted to be able to take it to shows.
In my opinion this car well exceeds NADA's definition of “Average Retail.” I don't think it is a #1 car, as there are imperfections, wear and tear, etc. I believe with more effort and investment it could be a #1 car.
