1966 Plymouth Barracuda Additional Info:

For Sale 1966 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S restoration project with accompanying 1966 Barracuda parts car (both original CA cars). The Formula S is a factory 4 speed, disc brake and fast manual steering car. The parts car, without title, is mostly complete with original 273 engine and automatic transmission. Both cars have minimal rust issues and are unaltered.

While it is a project, this rare equipped first generation Barracuda has very good bones to begin the restoration. “Good Bones” to me describes a car with valuable documentation, a significant number of original components intact, minimal alterations, minimal rust issues and a car factory equipped with desirable performance options for 1966.And it now resides on the East Coast not in CA.

The car has been in my possession with inside storage since 2010 when it was shipped east from CA to my home in VA. I was 68 years old then and now, 13 years hence, the car has eluded my plan to restore it. I bought the car because of its’ “good bones”, but at 81 years, my bones are not as good as they once were and now, rather than restore a car, I want to enjoy driving the pair of first generation Barracudas residing in my garage. I have done absolutely no work on the car. It remains in the same condition as I received it. But it was stored inside all those years, not outside under a canvas.

The Good Bones Formula S

The car includes the following:

Original factory build sheet, fender tag and VIN tag all in excellent readable condition.

Original 2582930 manual transmission radiator with shroud.

Original radiator cross member with embossed numbers matching the fender tag.

No cracked or chipped glass. Tinted front windshield has original Chrysler Pentastar stamped on it with minor fogging in one corner.

Instrument panel is complete without modifications or owner upgrades and includes all factory gauges, tach, 150 mph speedometer, AM radio and padded dash. Dash pad has minor cracking but without separation or breaks.

Car retains Inland 4 speed shifter mounted in a factory console.

Car was not factory undercoated and underside remains rust free.

Odometer shows 43484 miles, probably 143484 is my guess.

Missing: rocker panel moldings, wheel opening moldings, wheel covers, FS medallion, “PLYMOUTH” trunk letters, and trunk lock.

The trunk hinges need pins.

Original Factory Options as determined from the build sheet and fendertag.

Note from the person I purchased the car from in 2010:

I have a sweet 1966 Formula S Barracuda here. It needs a complete restore. The car has been sitting for the last 18 years. I have the build sheet, fender tag, that are both in good condition. I also have title, and registrations with the names of the two owners prior to me.

I know it needs a lot of work. I also know it has all the parts still intact that make a formula s car worth more than your average 1966 barracuda.

Motor

I have rebuilt the carburetor and fired up the motor with a jumper wire and can of clean gas. The motor runs fine and according to the previous owner has only about 6000 miles on it from when he pulled the motor honed the cylinders and installed new rings on the original pistons. It does need the valves adjusted as the lifters are a bit noisier than they should be. Motor should be original to the car they didn’t put vin# on the blocks in 66 model year but the block is date coded in 65 and that would be correct for an early 66 model year car.

The motor also has the all the correct parts like carburetor, valve covers, dual point distributor.

Transmission

According to the previous owner the clutch is shot and that’s why the car has been left sitting for 18 years. The trans shifts fine other than that it appears to be original. I have no ideal of its working condition.

Rearend

The original rear end was a posi style unit. The rear end in the car now is a replacement non Suregrip unit.

Interior

Interior is all original and needs to be restored. Passenger side floorboards have some rust damage and small holes in the front and rear foot well area. On the driver side I seen no holes but there was some pitting in the front foot well area. Rest of floor looked great and had the original silver paint still on it.

Brakes

Barracuda still has original master brake cylinder that leaks into the inside floorboard of the car. Car has disc brakes up front that was an option. I’m sure they would need to be rebuilt along with the back brakes. The car currently has no brakes.

Body

The body on this car needs a lot of work. I would say the metal is very solid with the exception of the spare tire well that has a couple pinholes and the floor boards that I mentioned in the interior section.

The passenger side is good with just very minor work that would be required of and 40+ year old car. (Almost 60 years old in 2023.)

The front grill looks really good but is missing drivers side head light bezel. The front bumpers needs replacing as its bent up pretty good.

The drivers side need some front fender work but I believe it is fixable it just bowed out slightly. The drivers door needs replacing however the door frame of the car is in good condition.

The drivers side rear quarter panel needs lots of work It should be savable with the right metal worker doing the job. Worst case it may need some patch panels around the wheel well opening.

The rear of the car has some damage below the trunk lid where the body is pushed in. I believe this can also be fixed with the right metal worker body man.

Wheels

Car has the 14 X 5.5 wheels and deep lug nuts that poke through the hub caps.

Please feel free to contact me if you would like additional information. I am quite familiar with the first generation Barracudas and would be happy to answer your questions. I restored and currently own a 1965 and 1966 Barracuda for my driving enjoyment. Both are 4 speed Formula S cars.
One final comment: I'm not a dealer nor a car flipper, rather a hobbyist who enjoyed restoring these unique Mopars to as near original factory specifications as possible. This 66 Formula S screams "return me to original"....if I were 10 years younger, I’d be doing just that.
