The combination of sleek Italian looks and raw Ford power creates an exotic car you can really enjoy, without worrying about outlandish timing belt changes or $2,500 water pumps. It was definitely ahead of its time as well. After all, how many cars in the early 70’s were mid-engined 5-speeds with 4-wheel disc brakes? This Pantera was originally sold through Jack Marshall Lincoln-Mercury in Dallas and presently shows 42k miles. It is a desirable split bumper / pre-L example, and with a July 1972 production date is one of the last such cars built (the Lusso version took over in August). It has never been “restored” but rather has been well maintained over the years. It is free of any nasty rust problems and has a sharp, straight body. It wears a repaint in its original Code 3 – White and has been fitted with GTS style fender flares and black accents. Modifications include front hood vents for improved radiator airflow, quarter panel intake scoops, and Simmons wheels (16” front, 17” rear). The original style exhaust remains. This Pantera retains its numbers-matching 351 Cleveland engine. It has been rebuilt with a few performance parts including an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and a Holley 4-barrel carburetor with mechanical secondaries. Note this engine should be run with a blend of racing fuel or octane booster for best performance. Additional features a high capacity oil pan, an electronic ignition, and an electric fuel pump. The 5-speed ZF transmission operates smoothly and was recently serviced which included a new second gear and synchronizer. The brakes have been replaced with modern Wilwood components front and rear. A parking brake is not present. Steering feel is nice and tight thanks to a new steering rack. Overall performance is fantastic and unlike any other car from the early 70’s!The black interior has a clean and uncluttered look. The carpet, seat covers, and seat foam have all been replaced while the dash, headliner, and door panels remain original. Also original are the steering wheel and horn button - unusual for a Pantera. A centerpiece of the interior is the classic Italian gated shifter. Just forward of this are four new center gauges and a radio delete plate. As with all Panteras, this car is equipped with power windows, power brakes, and air conditioning. The heater core has been disconnected (common due to proximity to the driver’s right foot) and the rear fiberglass tub is not present. The original owner’s manual is included along with service manuals. The Pantera is unmatched for pedigree and practicality. They look fast standing still with their sexy Italian lines and are great fun to drive. This car is a desirable split bumper model with limited miles, a few nice upgrades, and excellent mechanicals. And you won’t find many comparable examples for less than six figures, making this a nice deal in today’s market. Let this one show you what the DeTomaso Pantera is all about.
