1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Additional Info:
1970 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS
For consignment, an original example of a 1970 version of the Monte Carlo SS with the optional LS5 454ci V8. This car has a few faults but remains original and comes with its build sheet, dealer invoice and window sticker and has been the apple of our consignor's eye since he took over ownership. Purchased in 1995 and garage kept since, he has been its caretaker over the last 28 years. Let's delve into this highly optioned 1st year 1st generation Monte....Luxury and muscle are waiting for you!
Exterior
Black Cherry, the factory color is on this car and is a respray from sometime before 1995. The paint has inclusions throughout along with what appears to be a solvent based reaction causing tiny bubbles, however, even from a short distance these issues are almost invisible. The panels are straight, gaps are good, and a black vinyl top is looking great all around. The bumpers, egg crate grille, and headlight bezels remain shiny, as does the SS454 stainless rocker trim and wheel well highlight molding. Coke bottle design is seen and the body lines forming the bumped out rear quarter panels remain flawless as well as timeless. 15-inch deep dish Chevrolet rally wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle raised white letter radial rubber are on the corners and give a nice muscle look to this skate.
Interior
All original black vinyl abounds inside with it appearing on the door panels in tuck and roll form along with some faded black highlight carpet down low. Black vinyl with tuck and roll pattern covers the front bucket seats with smooth black vinyl bolsters and flanks the black and wood appliqué center console which sports a storage area with a locking cover and a dual vertical bar and horizontal connecting bar airline throttle cockpit style shift lever. The rear bench mimics the front buckets in material and design, and all is in good condition with no cracking or staining. A nice wood appliqué dash houses all original gauges, including the optional gauge package tachometer as well as the heater and AC airflow levers, factory AM/FM radio and various control buttons and knobs. A black covered top dash has nicely preserved padding and shows no cracking. Black carpet is on the floors and remains in nice condition, as does the headliner above.
Drivetrain
Lifting the hood, we see a numbers matching LS5 454ci V8 topped by a correct Rochester Quadrajet 4-barrel carburetor and backed by a TH400 3-speed automatic that is also indeed numbers matching. The correct 12-bolt conventional rear axle weighing in with Positraction and 2.56 gears rounds out the drivetrain. The engine bay is well detailed and looks near factory fresh with its orange/red painted block and supple hoses. A plus on this presentation and preservation.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust on the frame and dual exhaust system but all remains structurally solid. Factory undercoating is on the floors along with splashes of road dirt and patina. Power disc brakes are up front and power drum brakes are on the rear and for the comfortable ride we note F41 style front independent coil spring suspension working with a rear 4 link coil spring system.
Drive-Ability
A smooth-running car, quick starter, and comfortable interior all work together to make this a nice original car that offers up a smooth ride. Braking remained bias free during our panic stop tests and the steering was tight and responsive. All functions save for the AC blowing warm were working. My crack decoder and I took a few extra cool down laps so we could take in all the originality.
An overall nice original survivor that runs great and looks nice. Well maintained by a collector owner who has a love for these cars but is ready to pass this gem along to the next owner. Gracing the West mallway of our Hallowed Halls right here at Classic Auto Mall and ripe for the picking.
