Now you have a great and rare opportunity to own a part of Soviet history! Some history: Zaporozhets (ZAZ) was a series of rear wheel drive cars produced by ZAZ (Zaporozhsky Avtomobilny Zavod) factory in Ukraine. Different models of Zaporozhets, all of which had an air-cooled engine in the rear, were produced until 1994.
Zaporozhets was in high demand both in cities and in villages and is well known for its remarkable performance on poor roads due to its independent suspension and engine sitting on top of driving wheels, which makes them carry 60% of total car's weight. Another interesting feature of Zaporozhets is an absolutely flat even undercarriage. This way it is almost impossible to break something when going off the paved road. If one still managed to get stuck somewhere, ZAZ 968's curb weight of only 780 kg (1,720 lbs) made it easy to literally get out of the car, lift it, put back on steady surface and continue the journey.
Just like Volkswagen Beetle or Trabant in Europe, Zaporozhets was destined to become a people's car in the Soviet Union, but only a few of them survived. Nowadays original ZAZ 968 is truly a rare find even in Europe.
ZAZ 968 became the first vehicle for many Soviet people. Amazing how these small cars were driven all over the USSR. People could drive these cars for thousands of kilometers to the seaside in the summer.Numerous special versions of the Zaporozhets were produced, equipped with additional sets of controls that allowed operating the car with a limited set of limbs, and were given for free or with considerable discounts to disabled people, especially war veterans, side-by-sidewithSMZ-series microcars. Thesemobility carswould at times consume up to 25% of ZAZ factory output.
The 968M is the most contemporary Zaporozhets model and also spent the most time in production, spanning a career from 1979 to June 1st 1994.
