1973 Other Makes Reliant Scimitar Additional Info:
1973 Reliant Scimitar SE5a. The original sporting estate car. One of about 6 or so in the states. Fiberglass body, tube chassis with Ford Essex V6, 4 speed gearbox with overdrive on 3 & 4th gears, right hand drive. Rare full length sunroof.
Prior to my ownership, the car had much work done. Within the past 2 years the motor and trans were gone through, the overdrive was rebuilt and the sunroof was completely rebuilt. New clutch and all new clutch hydraulics. New exhausts were installed. But there was a lot left to do. So...
Purchased the car last year and have reinvested the purchase price to get the car sorted mechanically. It runs and drives excellently. New shocks, tie rods and suspension bushings, full engine service and tune, fluids changed, wheels balanced, aligned and corner weight balanced. The chassis is excellent. The exhaust was repositioned for better ground clearance. The overdrive trans and motor were recently rebuilt, both are in excellent working condition. With the overdrive engaged, the car will cruise effortlessly all day at about 80 mph. The tries are excellent and have much wear left in them. All the electrical systems were gone through; all the lights work and gauges were cleaned, painted and re-rung in new chrome rings. Speedo rebuilt. All work fine. The clock is a bit of a pain, but it is right at least twice a day. There is a brand new dash pad, just recovered. The rest of the interior is pretty good. The rear seat backs could use a carpet. but all in all it is pretty presentable. Have all receipts for my work, many old ones and the parts purchased. Have photos of work as well.
The work left to do on the car is purely cosmetic. It needs paint. Really badly. I'm not even going to tell you it's a 10 footer. It has got to be painted. Count on it. Period. There is however no body damage, dents or holes or anything like that. It will be very straightforward. And this is coming from my pal who has been doing this for ever and has done many of my cars. He says that since the paint is what it is it will strip easily. All new weatherstripping will come with the car. Also have excellent door handles and the last set of NOS threshold plates with the Scimitar logo available. Plus many other spares and original parts.
This is a neat old car that draws a crowd wherever it goes. Did a few shows last summer and it was a huge hit. You will not, in all likelihood see another anytime soon. I have put enough miles on the car to very confident in its reliability. It is a fast, capable little tourer with room for kids and stuff. It is actually very practical. Parts are very easy to get and the car is very simple to work on and service. The car is very complete. You won't have to spend your time chasing down stuff. It is turn key and ready to go. I'm selling because I am losing some storage and have got to thin out things a bit.
